It’s Friday Y’all | Life with Sweet Friends

It’s Friday, y’all.

Can’t believe I just said that. Last week I posted about going shooting and now I’m using the word, ‘y’all.’ Which, let’s be honest, is not a word. Oh dear. Texas life is rubbing off on me and I don’t know what I think about it. Now, I am from Oklahoma where they also say, ‘y’all,’ but for whatever reason I’ve begun to succumb more since living here. Stay strong, Mary! Stay strong.

While there are some things about Texas living that I try to resist, there are also some really sweet and rich things about living here. A particular thing comes to mind today. One specific blessing about Texas living that I am oh SO grateful for…is my sweet roommates. We have been living together for almost four months now and I couldn’t be more blessed to live with these two. They bless my life more than they know with their wisdom, their listening ears and their laughter. In the last six months we have been through a lot together. They laugh when I pull an ‘Oh Mary’ moment. They are amused to see how long it takes me to get out of my pajamas on any particular day (hey, working from home has its perks). They listen to me as I work through my own fears and anxieties, providing me with level-headed perspectives. They make me get up and exercise with them even when I don’t want to because they know it’s good for me. They help calm me down. They laugh AND rejoice with me. They even give me Valentine’s Day cards…how thoughtful is that?!?!?

I am reminded today to thank the Lord for putting such dear friends into my world. I say this over and over again, but it’s just true. I am blessed beyond belief!

Here’s to sweet friends/roommates that make life better!

Happy Friday….y’all!

Take Me Back Tuesday | Aunt Mary…and Breaking the Streak

My dad wanted four boys. God apparently has a sense of humor though because well, He gave him four girls. Even more, four girls in only three tries. The entire time I grew up, he always joked that each of us needed to have four boys and as many girls as it took. Sixteen grandsons was his request. He was joking…mostly. However, we call it the Powell family curse. Girls. Girls. Girls. When my mom gave birth to my little sister, all she could think about was prom dresses, braces, and weddings. Often times my dad would play the ‘Hairband Game.’ Basically, he would walk through the house and inevitably be able to point to a hair tie or bobby pin on the ground at least within ten feet of himself. Unfortunately, it was not often that he lost that game. Our house was and is full of giggles…LOTS of giggles. We played Barbies, dress-up and spent hours in the bathroom learning how to apply make-up. It was a household made mostly of women.

This Take Me Back post is particularly dear to my heart because you see, last Saturday my family experienced something very new. My sister, Allison, and her husband had a baby gender reveal party for their upcoming addition to the family! Friends and family gathered to find out if we would be welcoming a little boy or a little girl into our world. Everyone wore pink or blue to cast their vote and well, I went with what I knew and wore pink. They had taken the envelope the doctor had given them to reveal the gender and went to Gymboree. They picked out one girl outfit and one boy outfit and went to the register. Handing the clothes, some money and the envelope to the cashier they explained the situation and walked away, requesting that the cashier read the results and wrap the correct outfit. They then left and came back 20 minutes later…the secret revealed. As we sat in the living room, anticipation was thick. Jacob and Allison opened their gift and inside found the sweetest news.

The Powell family curse was BROKEN!!! Come July, I will have a NEPHEW!!!!! Both Allison and Jacob beamed with delight as they held the little blue outfit in their hands. What a day of rejoicing! I can’t wait to get that little boy in my arms and love him until he can’t take it anymore. Aunt Mary is definitely going to be the cool aunt out of the bunch (Beth and Emily…watch out). Unfortunately, each of us aunts have one slight disadvantage…we know NOTHING about boys!!! Going to have to take a crash course and improve my sports/video game skills!

So, in the name of nephews, aunts, the color blue and sweet gifts of precious life,

I say, Take Me Back!

(J-Baby will arrive in July and my twin sister’s child, Baby G, will be making his/her appearance in April! They are waiting to find out the gender until the baby is born so watch out…I may have two nephews or one of each. My life is so blessed!)

That’s my nephew!!!!!! He’s a prayer warrior already, folks!

Oops, Jacob the mustache is upside down.

The middle group refused to take ‘sides.’ Notice both my mother and grandmother are in that group. Grandmas love unconditionally I suppose.

I had to post a few of these because the expressions are just too great…especially my grandmother’s.

Favorite. Pure joy.

Can’t believe she is a Momma!!! To a boy!!!!!

This is so cute! It’s funny because I was the first girl on my dad’s side for 2-3 generations and my brother was the first boy on my mom’s side. It’s always exciting to learn what the baby will be…cute shower!

[…] last fall and we have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of their son. You may remember their super cute reveal party earlier this year. Being from a family of all girls, finding out there would be a boy to raise was […]

The Phillips Family | Orlando, FL Family Photographer

While most of my time behind the camera is spent with brides, grooms, floral arrangements and garter tosses, every so often I get the privilege of working with sweet families, seniors, newborns, and couples just wanting to celebrate their love. It’s a joy really, because though I love the wedding world, it’s also refreshing to have a little fun outside of it. Well over a year ago, while at my sister’s wedding shower in Orlando, I was blessed to meet Rebekah. We sat in the kitchen talking for a good while, just enjoying making a new friend. We talked very briefly about her three boys and how she wanted updated family pictures. Since I lived thousands of miles away in Dallas, I never thought it would actually happen. However, through a series of events, we were able to work it out for me to come to Florida and work with her precious family. I had such a blast working with them and felt ever so blessed to do what I do. Unfortunately, it’s not every day that you encounter a young family that loves each other, is healthy and models what a family should look like. This sweet family, though, reminded me the way family should be.

Enjoy some of my favorites from their session!

Happy Monday!

Take Me Back Tuesday | I Guess This Means I Live in Texas

I’m an Oklahoma girl…through and through. All you Texans out there, don’t judge me but I never really wanted to live in Texas. When you grow up an Okie it’s engrained in you. It just is. However, God has a sense of humor I suppose because well, here I find myself. A resident in Dallas, TX and not hating it. In fact, I’m even enjoying myself…a little bit. This last Saturday was a big step in my life as a Texas resident (notice I didn’t say ‘Texan’ because I will never concede that. Oklahoman til I die) and also I big step in checking off things on my bucket list. You guessed it, I shot my first gun. I’ve shot a bb gun at camp but let’s face it, this is pretty different. It’s not like we don’t shoot guns in Oklahoma but growing up in a family with mostly women, it just hadn’t happened. Apparently 26 was the year though as I shot my first shotgun this past weekend. My roommate, Julie, is a pro at this (please notice her specially made pink vest) and so she got a group together to shoot some skeet. I tagged along, mostly acting as an encourager, but shot three times and even hit a clay pigeon the third time. A natural, I know. I sent a picture to my family shortly after and pretty much everyone said one of two things: 1. The gun is bigger than you or 2. You looked a little silly. Not exactly the encouragement for the next Daniel Boone or John Wayne but oh well. It’s checked off my bucket list so I’m a happy camper.

So, in the name of guns, Texas residency and bucket lists,

I say, Take Me Back!

She’s legit people. For real…even put the boys to shame. I was a proud roomie.

Now, since I’m the pro at ‘shooting’ with my camera, we didn’t get an official photo of me with the gun. Just an iPhone pic. I’ll let you be the judge to see if I look silly…

Yes, I’m shooting left handed because I’m left eye dominant. Weird.

Breanna + Tom | Life-Long Teammates | Norman, OK

Mary Fields Photography

Every love story is so different and as I am in a business that allows me to tell such stories, I am reminded of this often. There is no one way to fall in love and no standard of love story. Each one unfolds so differently for everyone and well…I love it.

Breanna and Tom met while in school at the University of Oklahoma (BOOMER!) and while they were both involved in the Baptist Student Union on campus, they weren’t very close friends. That all changed though when Tom asked Breanna if she would consider leading an overseas mission trip with him last summer. Working alongside each other, for a purpose so dear to each one of their hearts, it didn’t take long for feelings to develop. Unfortunately, there was a no dating policy in place for the trip and so these two had to wait…left only to be friends. I can imagine that this would be hard but I can also imagine that it would be so beneficial. To get to know your future spouse in a role that they will always play…your teammate. A week after they got back though, Tom wasted NO time in taking the next step by asking her out on a date. Having already been through the ‘get to know you’ phase, it quickly became clear what the Lord had in their future. Tom proposed to Breanna on a fall day by the lake and she was stunned but so excited to say yes.

I was excited too when she contacted me about doing their May wedding since we know each other through my time at OU AND since it would get me back to a place I love so dearly! We had a blast walking around campus for their e-shoot and it reminded me of sweet days gone by! Enjoy some of my favs from their session!

Happy Monday!

Fav. Fav.Fav.

For all you past clients, you know what I’m thinking right now…YUMMY LIGHT!!!!

Sigh. Love this.

Oh, Bre. Beautiful.

Love this idea for Thank You cards during the engagement/wedding process.

Bre made it on pieces of maps since travel/missions is so important to the two of them. Again…I love it.

[…] a sweet day with a sweet couple! You may remember Tom and Bre from their engagement session I did earlier this year. Their story is a fun one. Acquaintances first. She thought he was a flirt […]
