Take Me Back Tuesday | A Child of the 90’s

It’s weird when you get to an age where you can date yourself. You know, look back and recognize what trends were popular in ‘your day.’ Sit around with your peers and say things that start with phrases like, “Remember wearing (insert crazy decade specific clothing item)?” Or, “Oh my gosh, I totally used to have one of those!” “We used to always….”

You get the picture. What’s even weirder though is when you are old enough to see those trends come back into style. Yeah, that’s a strange feeling. You have officially been around long enough for the cycle to come back around. White wash jeans anyone? Mmmhmm, they have made a comeback against all better judgment. All this to say, I am a child of the 90s. That really doesn’t feel like it was that long ago…like it was the decade before this one, right? Oh wait, nope that was over two decades ago. Sigh. Well, this week my roommate shared a video with me that just had to make an appearance on a Take Me Back post. Apparently Internet Explorer is ‘growing up’ and changing but not without first remembering their roots…the 90s. While I must admit I do not use IE, this video made me particularly endeared to them. And also to pogs, yo-yos, chia pets and my childhood. If you were a child of the 90s…I hope this walk down memory lane is sweet.

So, in the name of white wash jeans, slap bracelets, wind suits and the 90s,

I say, Take Me Back!

(Yes that is me with my sisters in about 1996. I am wearing American Flag shoes and a pink floral wind suit with a turtle neck. My prime, Internet. My prime. And to my sisters…I’m sorry for embarrassing you against your will.)

Oh my goodness, yes!!!! I’m guilty on almost every account! I just wish they’d included the plastic rings that made it easier to scrunch your shirt to the side. Remember those?!?! Thanks for taking me back, friend! And ps, I knew it was you in the red windsuit. Such a fashionista from a young age. 😉

Anna + Cole | An Autumn Wedding | Waco, TX

People say that eyes are the windows to the soul. I believe that but if eyes are the window, then smiles are the door. They can tell you a lot about a person’s state of happiness or sorrow. If they are forced and tight, it’s most likely a sign that inside feelings are forced and tight. If they are natural, genuine and uncontrollable…it gives you a pretty good indication that something sweet is going on. Something that you don’t have to conjure up. Something you don’t want to lose.

Well, smiles were everywhere that day…the natural kind. The kind you couldn’t contain even if you tried. Anna and Cole beamed from start to finish on their wedding day and I wouldn’t be surprised if they haven’t stopped smiling since. It was one of the most tender first looks I have ever photographed as Anna walked down the aisle to him. He beamed, his smile a mile wide, grabbing her hands and kissing them ever so sweetly. A moment that makes me ever so glad that I do what I do. Their friends and family gathered together to join as witnesses to such a precious union. It was a sweet day full of love, laughter and yes, you guessed it…smiles.

Anna and Cole, thank you for letting me be there on such a beautiful day. It was such a joy and I found myself smiling with you. I wish you all the best in the years to come and I can’t wait to see where God takes you in your journey as Mr. and Mrs.!

Enjoy some of my favs from their Waco, TX Wedding!

Take Me Back Tuesday | Days Gone By: A Sooner Born and Bred

I grew up Sooner born and Sooner bred. Allegiance to the Crimson and Cream has been engrained in me since well…the beginning. My dad used to take us to football games and do his best to teach us all about how the game was played. Without any sons, we were his only chance at sharing ‘sports wisdom.’ 20 years later, I can’t say I know everything about the game, but I can say that OU football and I, well, we are old friends. If you watch a game with me, beware. I pace. I jump. And oh, do I worry. One particular game, back when I was a kid, I remember my dad took my twin sister and I down to the tunnels to meet the twirlers. They were twins too and we wanted so badly to be them. To be on the field and perform in front of thousands of people. Oh, what a thrill that must be.

When it came time for us to choose a college, we looked around a bit but deep down I knew there was only one place I wanted to go. The University of Oklahoma. Home of the Sooners. My sister and I had been in the marching band in high school (don’t judge) and so we decided to join the Pride of Oklahoma’s Colorguard. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made. We weren’t quite the twirling twins we had aspired to be long ago…but we were close. I spent my Saturdays performing in front of 86,000 people and feeling that thrill I had imagined back as a kid.

This past weekend I had the privilege of working with a couple in Norman, OK, my old stomping grounds, as we did an engagement shoot in preparation for their May wedding. We traipsed around OU’s campus taking pictures and I had a rush of memories come flooding in. It’s been over four years since I walked those sidewalks as a student but I remember them clear as day. After the session, I met up with some of my old college friends, including two of my college roommates. We called ourselves the Charles House ladies back in the day (our house being on Charles Street) and we were a great bunch. Some of my dearest friends to this day.

I drove away, on my way back to Dallas, caught somewhere in between gratefulness and sorrow. It’s hard to let go of days gone by, especially when they are so rich. Yet, instead of mourning the loss of a special season of life, I suppose the best thing to do is to celebrate it. I am no longer a student. I no longer perform every Saturday in front of 86,000 people. I no longer wear the crimson uniform. I no longer live on Charles Street. However, I am forever a Sooner born and Sooner bred. I am forever grateful for days gone by.

So, in the name of crimson, cream, Sooners, old friends and college memories,

I say, Take Me Back!

(please forgive the poor quality on this images…they were taken long before my 5D Mark iii came into my life)

Charles House ladies.

Oh, how terribly I miss these days. And my sweet friends.
