Behind the Lens | Jude Wallace | Smelling Like a Baby

As I sit here and type this, I am aware of something really wonderful…

I smell like a baby.

It’s the sweetest smell in all the world. It’s distinct and can’t be bottled. It’s precious. You see, I smell like a baby because I’ve been holding a baby all morning and not just any baby. No, I’ve been holding a child so precious to me that words cannot even describe. This morning I sat in a rocking chair and prayed over my own little nephew. Jude Wallace. He is perfect in EVERY way. No really, he is. Partly because we share half of the same DNA. Just sayin.

The last 72 hours have been all kinds of crazy but crazy wonderful. I don’t have time to do a full post just yet because I’m caught up in everything Aunt-ish. Keep an eye out for a Take Me Back post really soon, full with pictures of my new favorite subject. Until then, I plan on enjoying every moment of smelling like a baby.

The Birthday Trio!!!

I love knowing that this precious babe will be incredibly well photographed. 🙂

You and his mother are gorgeous; and I agree: He’s perfect.

Can’t wait to smell like baby myself! Want to hug and kiss him so bad! I’m sure you wouldn’t mind sending a few from me, right? 😉

Behind the Lens | The Greatest Birthday Present

Oh, how to even begin this post. I am at a loss. Or really, I’m numb with excitement. You see, today is my birthday. I’ve grown up sharing my birthday with a person who is incredibly special to me. We have been together literally since the BE-GINNING! Like the very start. Yep, we were wombmates before we were roommates (see what I did there). To say that she is my best friend is a severe understatement. There really are no amount of words that could describe what she means to me or sum up our relationship. She is my kindred spirit. My confidant. My sounding board. My rationality when I am irrational. My voice of reason. My teammate. My supporter. My best bud. My cherished friend.

She has been by my side through both joys and sorrows. Losses and gain. Pains and victories. She has prayed with me. Cried with me. Laughed with me. Danced with me. Worshipped with me. She is the one person that it is literally never ‘hard’ to be in relationship with. We have been talking ever since before we could form words and yet we never run out of things to talk about. Not only that, but sometimes we have full conversations in British accents (happened today actually). Needless to say, she is my best friend. I have ALWAYS felt privileged to share a birthday with her but today…today has become even MORE special. You see, today she will hopefully give birth to her firstborn, my niece or nephew.

I got word last night that my twin sister had gone in to labor and will hopefully deliver today! She wasn’t due for another week so it is absolutely the Lord’s perfect planning that this child be born on our birthday! We had discussed the possibility but wrote it off as unlikely. Funny how unlikely strangely is often ‘likely.’ Once I got word, my parents and I booked our flight to head first thing this morning. God willing, I will hold that baby in my arms on the anniversary of my own birth. Could there be a better birthday gift?!?! I can’t think of one. So, on this 19th day of April, I happily celebrate the life of my best friend as well as her little one’s entrance in to this world. I’ll be so privileged to share such a day with two people who I love so dearly. May it be a day of celebrating new life, a wonderful gift from God.

Take Me Back Tuesday | Perks and Sacrifices: A Day on the Beach

Being a wedding photographer means a few sacrifices. One, you plan your life in advance. Waaaay in advance. I know what I’m doing pretty much every weekend from now through November. It’s crazy but true and leaves very little room for spontaneity. The second major sacrifice is that you work weekends. While most of my friends are off on Saturdays and enjoying each other’s company, that day is work day for me. While those sacrifices can be frustrating at times, I was well aware of them going in to this job and I can still say it is worth it. One of the reasons it is worth it is the perks of being a wedding photographer! Even though I was working two weekends ago, I was also in the beautiful state of Florida along the Gulf Coast. I had the absolute privilege of photographing a wedding at the Vinoy Hotel in St. Petersburg, FL and I can’t wait to share some images from that gorgeous wedding. With the wedding on a Sunday, my Monday became my day off and guess what I did…yep. Beach baby. My second shooter, Julie, and I spent the afternoon lounging on the beach and soaking up the Florida sun. A tan in early April? Yes, please. We just read, listened to music, enjoyed the sun on our faces and took in the day. With my toes dug deep down in the sand and the water swirling around my feet, the perks seemed to outweigh the sacrifices. I am so blessed to be able to do what I love, travel while doing it and enjoy some of life’s sweetest blessings along the way.

So, in the name of sacrifices, perks, sunshine and Florida beaches,

I say, Take Me Back!

So, I love this shot simply because of the girl running. It gives it a timeless feel to me.

She didn’t want me to post this because ‘it’s silly’ but I said silly is best. And plus, I’m the one blogging! Muahahaha.

Ok, so my dream is to do an engagement shoot underneath a pier. The light is absolutely perfect. Until then, we of course just had to do some portraits of each other. Duh.

Below is a reminder of why I tend to stay behind the camera. Mary=awkward. For real, it’s a foreign thing for me. I should work on that so that I don’t do whatever it is I am doing in these images…

Julie, thanks for your help and being my travel buddy! Here’s to more Mary Fields’ travel adventures!

Behind the Lens: A Little Break

It was about December and my ‘booking’ season was at its peak. My calendar was filling faster than I ever imagined it would which is a great problem to have. However, with the new announcement of my twin sister’s pregnancy, I had some decisions to make. April 25th was the day projected for this sweet little one’s arrival and as I thought about it, I knew. I knew that I had to be there. I had to be able to drop everything at a moments notice, get on a plane and be by my best friend’s side. Wedding inquiries rolled in for mid to late April and I just knew it would be worth it. So, I apologetically declined. Those weeks were too important to me. No matter where my business goes, I pray that family always comes first. So, after an eventful few months and three back to back weddings, I’m taking a little break. It’s little mind you as the calendar is full in the months to come but I am so very grateful for a little ‘time-off.’ I’m keeping my phone by me at all times just in case I get ‘the call.’ My days are still filled with LOTS of editing and prep for the rest of a busy wedding season, but my obligations are minimal. Stay up with the blog as I have a lot to show, not to mention the post I am the most anxious to reveal…the arrival of my sweet niece or nephew! EEEK! I’m antsy just thinking about it! Until then, I intend to soak up a few weeks of off time!

Happy Monday!!!

(Since every post is better with a picture, above is a sneak peek of my latest engagement session! Hitting the blog soon! Is that location unbelievable or what?!?! And it’s in Dallas, TX…who knew?!)

Ali + Daniel | A 7F Lodge Engagement | College Station, TX

Mary Fields Photography

Oh goodness. I love this session and this couple. Ali was a referral from another photographer and her date had just opened up. She and Daniel Skyped with me before we booked and I knew we’d have fun. After having to reschedule their College Station session due to weather we finally made it happen…on a rainy day. It was as if someone was playing a cruel joke on us. As I drove to their ceremony site, 7F Lodge, for pictures, it was a downpour! No joke. I said a quick prayer and thankfully, the rain stopped right before we started shooting. Ironically, it created the most BEAUTIFUL light! I was giddy with excitement. If you’re a past client, you know that I am NOT exaggerating.

Ali and Daniel are just wonderful. Their love story is even more wonderful as it reminds me that timing is everything in a relationship. They were both students at Texas A&M and had met before. However, love didn’t blossom until they were both randomly on top of the same mountain in Colorado skiing with their families. They bumped into each other, decided to go on a date and well…the rest is history! On their three-year anniversary, Daniel took her to Kyle Field on Texas A&M’s campus (a big deal for all you non-A&M-ers), told her the Top 10 reasons he would love her forever and then got down on one knee. They are planning an October wedding and I can’t wait to be there to capture such a special day!

Ali and Daniel, thanks for letting me be part of this process with you. I had such a fun time escaping the rain with you two and laughing along the way.

College Station and Texas A&M’s campus hold a lot of special memories for these two, so it was a no-brainer when choosing a location for their e-shoot. Their ceremony site at 7F Lodge is a dream as well so we had to take a few there. Enjoy some of my favorites from their session!

Happy Friday!

This chapel in the woods is just perfect.

Y-U-M-M-Y light, people.

Love, Love, Love.

Ali, you are stunning. Simply stunning.

Of course we would love to use this random two-seater bike. Thank you so much 7F Lodge.

Ok, first the two-seater bike and now this ridiculously cool teal Ford truck? I was in heaven.

FAV-orite.

They brought their sweet dog along for the shoot! He was patient all day except for when he saw a cat. Then we lost him…

So, one of the key places in College Station is Northgate. We headed down there and they showed me this gem. Bottle Cap Alley. Years and years of old bottle caps in the alley. Half disgusting. Half awesome. Really, more awesome than not.

Look at all those bottle caps!

Such a beautiful couple.

If you aren’t familiar with A&M tradition, your Aggie ring is a BIG deal. So of course, theirs had to be included.

More A&M tradition. The Century Tree. Legend has it if you walk under the tree with someone, you are destined to get married. This was their first time to walk under it together! Legend also says if you walk under it alone, you never get married. I of course had to walk under it in order to photograph. Shoot. Fingers crossed that it only counts if you are an Aggie!

FAV.

Under the tree. Together.

I’ll close with this. Another Aggie tradition: If you put ‘a penny on Sully’ (a statue on campus) then it’s good luck. Usually it’s for an upcoming test. Not that they’ll need it in marriage, but it couldn’t hurt to ask for a little luck from Sully!

[…] the colors, the details, the venue and this wonderful couple! You may remember these two from their College Station engagement session last spring where I had an absolute blast getting to know them and documenting their love story. […]
