Behind the Lens | Love N’ Coffee

I used to be a coffee snob. Not in the sense that I had particular coffee preferences but more like I was anti-coffee. It’s true. Disown me if you will. Stop following this blog if you must but it’s true. I prided myself on not drinking coffee. Then, something changed. I was on my way to a bachelorette party the same day that I had finished working at a summer camp for over three months (i.e. exhaustion…pure exhaustion) and I simply needed help. If I was going to be a good bridesmaid, which I always try to be, that would mean that I needed energy. Energy to scream, squeal, cry, pray and of course dance! Running on an empty tank I stopped by Starbucks and told the barista my dilemma. He was so very patient with me as I knew absolutely NOTHING about what I was ordering and gave me a few suggestions. Til this day, I still drink the same drink he suggested. I owe that man a place in my will. Or maybe a namesake. ‘Hello. This is my daughter, Barista.’  It has potential but I digress. Three days later, after three visits to that same Starbucks, my friend was married, I had fulfilled my duties with plenty of squeals and tears and…I had transitioned. Coffee had entered my life. I can’t say that I wanted it to happen but it just did and since then, it’s been a slow progression to love. It’s not a full-blown addiction but I’m afraid it’s not that far away. There…you have my confession.

Today, on this Friday morning, my energy is a bit low and I’m feeling a bit like I did on that summer day. I’m gathering my things and about to head out-of-town for an engagement session. Headed back to the city of my alma mater, I have a session with a sweet couple and I’m pumped! Pumped because even in the midst of life’s exhaustion, I’m getting to do what I love and share it with people in love. Not to mention, I have my new friend ‘coffee’ to keep me company along the way. Here’s to love, squeals and tears, coffee and baristas!

Happy Friday!

Take Me Back Tuesday | Washington DC

I’m so excited about this Take Me Back post!!! A little over a week ago, I was blessed to be able to go to our nation’s capitol for an engagement session! I know, my job is rough. More to come on that awesome session later, but while I was out there I of course had to take some days to site see. My roommate, Julie, was able to come along and we stayed with some of her friends who just moved out there. We spent the first day doing the engagement session and the other days embracing our inner tourist. My parents met and fell in love in DC and so they have been telling me ever since I can remember, how wonderful the city is. They have even tried several times to convince me to move there. I had been two other times in my life but I was too young to really appreciate all that the city is. This trip left me with a new city crush. It was frigidly cold, which I usually can’t stand, but for some reason I didn’t mind. Maybe it was that from every angle, I had the most beautiful view of the Washington Monument. That has a way of down playing the temperature. Anyway, I’m excited to share some of my favorites from the trip! Don’t worry that I took more images than I ever care to admit. Consider this your fair warning that there are A LOT of images ahead.

So, in the name of cold weather, patriotism and work/play,

I say, Take Me Back!

Engagement session time! Please notice my homemade ‘photographer’ gloves. What is my life?!?!

Air and Space Museum.

Fun new friends!

This was absolutely the coolest…our nation’s most foundational documents. Left me in awe.

Super cool French bakery we ate at. Made me want to be French.

Don’t worry…Claude Monet signed these.

Eastern Market!

Apparently Ted’s Bulletin is a Capitol Hill staple. It was fabulous.

So we may have periodically stopped to take some portraits. Hey, I need experience in front of the camera and Julie is learning the ‘behind the lens’ gig. Plus, I was constantly inspired…

Is this not the coolest street corner?

Arlington National Cemetery. So sobering. So grateful.

They guard this 24 hours a day…even in Hurricane Sandy. Such an honor to fallen unknown soldiers.

Nighttime monument tour = Awesome.

Silly caution signs. They add character, right?

I’ll end with this shot cause I love it…

Stunning. I especially love the black and white shots! Loved the post! Thanks!

Alexa + Phil | A White Rock Lake Engagement Session | Dallas

They met 5 years ago in the triathlon club at Baylor University. On first meeting, she noticed his amazing smile and they both noticed each other’s killer good looks. Quickly though, the two started to fall in love with some much more. She was drawn to his humbled spirit and he fell for her soft loving heart. Sustaining it all, though, was the admiration for each other’s faith in Jesus.  After two and a half years of dating, he proposed where it all began, on campus at Baylor. He pulled her out of the car in the middle of the pouring rain, walked her to the fountains outside the science building and kneeling under his umbrella, he asked her to be his bride. In my time with these two, it is so clear that they are anxious to start a new chapter of life together as husband and wife.

Alexa and Phil, you made my job WAY too easy and I had such a blast during our session. Your love for one another is effortless and I can’t wait to see where the Lord takes you! Come on June!!! Come quickly!

Enjoy some of my favs from their engagements!

Happy Monday!

Y’all are such a pretty couple! You guys should be the sample pictures in frames.
Anyway, I am so happy for you guys. Alexa, you have always been a beautiful person inside and out and you deserve this kind of love. Congratulations and good luck!

[…] sweet couple booked me several months ago and we did their engagements back when there was still a chill in the air and the leaves were still all kinds of beautiful […]

Behind the Lens | Up Close

Sometimes I get a good look…at myself. Let’s be honest, there are a lot of things that we like to see up close but ourselves? Yeah, that’s not one of them. I’d prefer to keep the ‘up close and personal’ for things like art, George Clooney and the inside of my eyelids. There might be some other things that are good to see close up, but my own flaws and failures I prefer to keep at a safe ‘unfocused’ distance.

This past week, as I was traveling the nation in a crazy frenzy, I noticed a few things about myself that I didn’t really like. Traveling has a way of doing that to us, stripping us of so much and leaving us a bit exposed, often stressed to the point of reaction. Don’t worry, I wasn’t yelling in the airport. In fact, no one else probably even noticed. I’ll spare you the details and instead, I’ll focus on what I learned since I know you are dying to hear my wise insights. Consider me your Cyber Yoda…for gain wisdom from my mistakes you will.

While editing on the plane home, I ran across this picture from a recent wedding and it helped me to put into words the things I had been feeling. You see, over the last few crazy weeks, I learned that it is not pleasant to see yourself up close, it can be uncomfortable and leave you feeling a bit tangled up. However, the end result, if you let it, can actually be quite beautiful. Personal growth isn’t easy, but it’s worth it.

So, with a desire for that which is more beautiful, I’m making a new resolve to live my life…up close.

Happy Thursday!

(One of my wonderful second shooters, Jenny, took this picture of me at a wedding recently. She walked up and said, “Oh I have to document this.” Yes, I know that it looks like my leg is detached from my body but don’t worry…this is totally normal for me. You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do, right?)

Awkward pose, but you got the shot! 😉

McKenie - January 11, 2013 - 12:10 am

Thanks for sharing! We still need that date. 🙂

Chrystina - January 11, 2013 - 9:04 pm

I sit and stand in weird ways all the time, so I get it. My actual usual “standing around” position looks a lot like a flamingo. Also, it’s definitely cool to see how some of the wedding photographs actually get taken, thanks for sharing!!

Allison’s Bridals | Dallas Arborteum

Allison and I worked together in the summer during college at my most favorite place in the world, Kanakuk Kamps. I remember meeting her and thinking, she has the warmest most bubbly personality. We hadn’t connected in years when out of the blue she contacted me about doing a bridal session for her. She prefaced it with, “You might think I’m crazy but, I’m actually already married.” I of course DID NOT think she was crazy! She had gotten married less than two years ago but never had bridal portraits done. After the wedding, she and her mom started talking about how great it would have been to have some formal portraits of Allison in her dress and that they were sad they hadn’t done it before the wedding. That’s where I came in. I was SO excited about doing this for Allison because I love the idea of doing post-wedding bridal portraits AND I’d get to reconnect with an old friend.

After the session, we all agreed that this post-wedding bridal portrait option was a great idea. I began thinking that I needed to start encouraging brides to do this if they never had bridal portraits done. Here are a few of my reasons:

1. You aren’t operating on a budget like you were with your wedding.

2. It’s low stress because it’s post-wedding.

3. It can be a fun experience with your mom/sisters/friends.

4. You get to put your dress on again!!!!!

While getting bridals done before the wedding is also a great option (trial run for hair and make-up, allows you to have portraits at the reception etc.), if you are on a budget then this might be a great idea for you! Save up for it after the wedding and get a chance to put that beautiful gown back on one more time!

Enjoy some of my favorites of Allison’s session. Allison, you are way too beautiful but I’m not complaining. It made my job easy! Thanks for letting me be part of such a fun experience!

Happy Wednesday!

Jessica Gardner - January 9, 2013 - 4:28 pm

1. Love this idea!
2. LOVE this location.
3. Those last three images are breathtaking!!

Probs one of my favorites by you!

Chrystina - January 10, 2013 - 4:07 pm

First of all, I totally agree with warmest most bubbly personality. Second of all, these pictures are stunning. I’m excited to keep following along on the blog. (Third of all, I’m glad that both myself and the person who commented before me feel the need to make lists.) Thanks for sharing!!
