2012 In Review | A Different Angle

Where in the world did 2012 go?!?! Here I find myself just 4 days away from the start of a new year and I can’t for the life of me figure out what happened to this past 361 days! What a whirlwind! As I am prepping for the start of 2013 and a whole new season of weddings, engagements, portraits and life, I thought I’d take some time to reflect on all the joys of the last year.

This will be a two-part blog with the first being a ‘behind the scenes’ look at Mary Fields Photography. Get ready folks. What is to follow may both scare and surprise you. I confess, I do NOT look good behind the scenes on a wedding day. It’s just the truth. I make strange faces, stand in funny poses and look like I might have just gone through the car wash…without my car. However, in an effort to give you an inside scoop, here are some behind the lens photos from 2012.

A shout out to all my wonderful second shooters who help me capture these ‘gems.’

Disclaimer: Yes I appear in the same dresses in many of these shots. When none of the guests are the same, who cares if you wear them often. Right? Don’t judge.

Happy Friday!

This mega lens is the reason I may have some back problems. It’s a beast.

Here’s introducing one of my fabulous second shooters, Jenny. She did a lot of the weddings with me this year and was SUCH a help. We might have snuck out of the reception to snap a few sunset shots.

Reflections. They make my life both awesome and difficult.

Some day I may discover I have knee problems. Oh wait…I think today is that day.

So the next three? Apparently hand motions are my thing…

You know…just Instagrammin’

Hottest wedding of the year. 101 degrees. Thankfully the bride came prepared with a fan! Brilliant!

You may not know this but I am a jack of many trades. Not only am I photographer but I also specialize in boutonniere pinning, wedding dress bustling, putting on veils and of course make-up. You buy one…you get them all.

I had to include this one because not only do I look like I am literally ‘shooting’ the wedding cake, but the coordinator’s face in the background is priceless. It’s these moments in culling images that make my life entertaining.

Why do I look like I am trying to race the bride?

Natural light ladies and gents. It’s worth it. Also, yes I am about to get on a stool because yes I am a bit vertically challenged. Every artist must adjust.

Notice me in the pink. This is what happens when you don’t have enough people.

It may have taken us a time or two to get it right…

And then there were two of me…

The one where I manage to ruin the shot and look like I’m about to kill someone at the same time. Job well done.

A mini portrait session in the yummy light during a reception. Thanks Jenny.

My good friend, Tinkerbell, was there to help me shoot family portraits. Thanks, Tink. (give it a minute and you’ll figure it out).

#1 rule: Fix the small things before to save editing time later.

Oh the faces I make. Not so pretty.

I promise, no matter what it looks like, I was not picking my nose.

I have yet to be burned but I’m not holding my breath.

Dallas skyline fun.

Ok, so I can’t tell whether or not they are listening to my instruction or thinking I’m crazy. Maybe I’m asking them to ‘raise your hand if you think I’m crazy.’

Proof that I can be funny. Sometimes.

Thanks to another awesome second, Lauren, for these shots!

Love this shot except that why didn’t anyone tell me my zipper was coming undone. Embarrassing.

Just a typical day on the job. Walking backwards into oncoming traffic with a dozen men in tuxes. My life is ridiculous…and awesome.

I had to put these in there to show that my twin sister and I are a wedding duo. Hair and make-up are our specialty. This is probably wedding 324 of our combined genius.

Just me and Jesus hanging out.

Yes blurry, but a really good insight into how I feel in front of the camera.

I will close with this gem because it embodies how I feel about 2012 and my business.

Raelyn + Andrew | An Anniversary Shoot | Dallas, TX

I first met Raelyn on a runaway carriage ride. Pulled by two giant and very frightened Clydesdales. In Florida. During a tropical storm. At a wedding that I was shooting. No joke.

None of that is exaggerated except that I might have met her the night before at the rehearsal dinner. So, in an effort to be accurate and honest, let’s just say that our friendship was sealed on that runaway carriage ride. Raelyn and her husband Andrew were involved in a wedding I shot last April and so even though we all actually lived in Dallas, our friendship began there…in a very wet and frightened manner. Raelyn is a videographer and was helping out with filming the wedding. The media team and the bride and groom had all piled into the back of the horse-drawn carriage to take portraits/video post-ceremony. Already drenched by the tropical storm that had just blown through during the outdoor ‘farm’ ceremony, we were laughing and chatting away about the unique events of the day thus far. In perfect accordance with the somewhat chaos of the day, the Clydesdale horses suddenly got spooked by a lone cow and took off running. Tumbling around in the back of the TINY carriage, we all dropped to the floor to avoid low-hanging trees and held on for dear life. As soon as the horses finally calmed down, then set in the laugher. Uncontrollable laughter. It was a fun moment. In fact, it is to this day one of my favorite memories of a Mary Fields’ wedding.

After having gone through all of that together, I was so excited when Andrew asked me to do an anniversary shoot as a gift to Raelyn. These two are SUCH a blast and I had so much fun doing their session. Not only did we get to celebrate their 3 years of marriage, but we also got to do some fun headshots and styled shots for their exciting career paths. Raelyn owns and operates the video production company, That’s So Money and Andrew is finishing up his seminary degree here in Dallas. In the spring, they will be moving to Fayetteville, AR to plant a church called, The Hill Church. They are sad to live the big city of Dallas but oh so excitedly heading to the hills of the Ozarks to see what God has in store for them.

Raleyn and Andrew, thank you so much for letting me be part of documenting your selfless love and helping you as you both move forward in the career/ministry paths that the Lord has laid out. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds and I had a blast with you both! From the soggy farm lands/crazy runaway carriage rides of Florida, to the busy streets of Dallas it’s been fun to develop a friendship and I hope it will only continue as you head on toward the hills of Arkansas!

Happy Thursday!

Take Me Back Tuesday | Merry Christmas -The Reason for the Season

I know it’s a little late but here’s wishing you a Merry Christmas! I am sitting at my grandparent’s home in Oklahoma, warm and snug, watching Christmas movies with my family. All is well.

However, more than ever before, this year I am reminded of the reason for the season. May we never forget that beyond the Christmas trees, the gifts, the mistletoe and the lights, it all pales in comparison to the ultimate gift. The Savior of the world, Jesus Christ.

In the wake of so many tragedies in our nation as well as some heartaches of my own, the reality of the brokenness of our world is hard to ignore. Horrific unjust acts happen every day and as much as we try to explain them, there is no real understanding. In the midst of this holiday season, I am realizing that while we are celebrating the coming of Christ as a baby, our hope lies in one thing. The return of Christ as a King.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” -Revelation 21:3-5

In the wake of such brokenness, it is this promise that brings hope. This promise that comes with the celebration of Christmas because the birth of Jesus, also brings the hope of His return and the end of tears. The end of mourning. The end of crying and the end of pain. The making of all things new. With this hope, I celebrate today.

Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday season! Praying that if you do not know this hope, that you would begin to seek it out.

Happy Christmas Tuesday!

Christmas Traditions and The Winners of the Giveaway!

If you follow this blog enough, you will learn that I’m weird. Don’t worry, I still like myself but it’s just the truth. Face it, everyone has their quirks and I am certainly not exempt. Although, I tend to think my quirks are more awesome than everyone elses. Just being honest.

One of my quirks is that I LOVE to remember. It gives me warm fuzzies and who doesn’t love the warm fuzzies? (side note: the auto correct on my computer doesn’t seem to recognize the word, ‘fuzzies.’ Keeps wanting to change to fuzzes. What in the world?!?!) Anyway, I love to remember and to celebrate traditions. I’m an old soul with a sentimental bent. So, of course with it being Christmas Eve and all, a little rememberin’ is in tall order. Christmas Eve for my family was always full of tradition, as was every holiday actually. While I have a lot more, in the name of brevity, I have listed my top five favorite Christmas Eve/Christmas traditions for you to enjoy. I can just sense you sitting on the edge of your seat…

1. Decorating Christmas cookies…until midnight on Christmas Eve– My family is notorious for ‘running late,’ and so whether or not we started at 6 pm or 9 pm, we were going to bake and frost those cookies by golly. Being the perfectionist that I am, my sisters would regularly get frustrated with me for taking so long on each cookie. So what if I wanted to place each sprinkle individually? I had a vision in my head, people! It just so happened that it included spelling out words…with sprinkles. Again…weird.

2. Writing Santa a Christmas letter- Believe it or not, we started this family tradition ages ago and have kept it until this day. Every year, no matter what time of night, we sit down on Christmas Eve and write ‘Santa’ a letter telling him about our year. Everyone gets to give a short recap of their highlights and to request a few desired gifts. The older we get, the more I enjoy reading old letters and seeing all the life we have lived and the blessings our family has received. When finished, it is always left on the fireplace with the cookies and a carrot for Rudolph.

3. Santa’s reply– Now, I have to say that I don’t really believe in Santa but somehow he is always faithful to answer my Christmas letter. Every Christmas we wake up and read Santa’s response to the letter we wrote the night before. His handwriting always seems to resemble my mother’s or father’s for some strange reason. They must have had the same penmanship teacher growing up. Santa always leaves sentiments for the year that is coming to a close and gives well wishes for our upcoming year.

4. Slumber parties/Waking up- Don’t ask me how this tradition got started but for some reason on Christmas Eve my sisters and I have a slumber party on the our living room floor. Maybe it’s because we all wanted to be together. I like to think that. While this tradition doesn’t happen quite as much anymore since my sister’s husbands aren’t really on board, it used to be that we would pull out the sleeping bags and have ourselves an original Christmas slumber par-tay. Even up through college. To make it better, my father would ALWAYS come to wake us up in the morning with the same words. “Looks like Santa didn’t come, you all must have been bad this year.”  If for some reason he forgot to say it, we’d remind him and wouldn’t budge until he said it. We are quirky about tradition.

5. Christmas Breakfast with Chopsticks– I know, I know. Weird again but just wait. One Christmas, my father had just returned from a trip to China. He brought back each one of us a set of chopsticks and gave them to us as a Christmas gift. That Christmas we made the decision to try eating our breakfast with them and it just sort of stuck. So, now we eat our morning meal with chopsticks…cinnamon rolls, eggs, sausage and all. Needless to say, I’ve become a pretty talented chopstick user.

As stated before, we are a bit strange but the reality is…I love everything about it. I love it because it’s us and it encompasses so many sweet memories.

So, this ‘weirdo’ is wishing you a Christmas Eve filled with lots of love, laughter, chopsticks, slumber parties and sweet memories!!!

Juli + Jonathan | An Autumn College Station, TX Wedding

Mary Fields Photography

“She’s everything I’m not. Without her, I’d still be wasting my life trying to find what was missing,” he said about her when I asked what about her made him better. A good answer I’d say when talking about the woman you are about to commit the rest of your life to.

It was a beautiful fall day in south Texas, a little bit windy but beautiful nonetheless. Exactly the way a fall day should be, especially when it’s your wedding day. It was special for a number of reasons. One, Alabama was getting beat by Texas A&M and so for a group of Aggies, it was a day to remember. Just slightly more significant than that, though, it was special because two people, much in love, were celebrating their long-awaited marriage.

Juli and Jonathan stood before friends and family on a beautiful site in College Station and promised to love each other for the rest of their lives. As the sun set, it was contrarily the dawn of a new journey in their lives. A journey they would take together.

J and J, thanks so much for letting me be part of your special day! I consider myself blessed to do what I love but also to be there for others as they celebrate their love. Wishing you the best in your years to come as Mr. and Mrs.!!!

Enjoy some of my favorites from their autumn wedding! (Autumn is my absolute favorite. If only I could convince God to give us beautiful colored trees all year round…)

Happy Wednesday!

Oh, girl. You are stunning.

I love when brides wear veils, ESPECIALLY cathedral length. They make my day.

Just stop it. You are too much.

Coming out on the balcony to see her groom.

Married!

Their new family! This is Jonathan’s sweet little girl. She is too precious for words.

I’ll close with two really fun images. Thanks to my amazing second shooter, Jenny, she pulled off some ridiculously rad light painting pics. Jenny, you are AWEsome!

Lindsey McClennahan - December 28, 2012 - 3:34 pm

It looks like you had a super fun year! That solid black dress might be the cutest, most professional, stunning dress I’ve ever seen. ( Not to get creepy) Love from Oklahoma! Hope you have an amazing new year !
