Take Me Back Tuesday | Choosing Your Cup

Their house is the greatest place on earth. It’s like a bed and breakfast only better…way better. When we would visit my grandparents house as kids, we’d wake up in the morning to the smell of cinnamon rolls and homemade hot chocolate. Some of the sweetest smells in all of the earth. What made it the most memorable, was the way we’d drink it. With the most delicate teapots and teacups. We felt like princesses every time. My grandmother had collected beautiful tea pots and painted china tea cups over the years, so we’d go to the cupboard and pick our tea cup for hot chocolate. Now, you didn’t just pick ANY cup. Nope. You picked your cup. The one that fit YOU. Some were simple. Some were elaborate. Some were wide. Some were narrow. Some cups were shallow. Some were deep. Some were pretty on the outside and some were pretty on the inside. It was a big decision.

Now, bear with me for a second. Lately I’ve been thinking: Isn’t life funny? Funny in a sort of sarcastic ‘haha’ kind of way and not a belly laugh kind of way. Belly laughs are the best. Unfortunately though, I think a good amount of life’s humor is more of a sarcastic kind of funny. You laugh because if you don’t, you’ll have emotions very much on the other side of the spectrum. Life has a way of weighing down on you sometimes and exhausting you with decisions, expenses and changes. Unexpected difficulties or just plain annoying frustrations. They are inevitable you see. They are life.

However, before you start thinking I’m a major Debbie Downer, let me explain. You see, lately I have learned something very valuable. Something that is changing my life perspective.

While I can’t choose what is poured in to me… what challenges come my way. What frustrations I will encounter. What unexpected circumstances I will endure. While I can’t I can’t choose those…there is one thing I can choose. I can choose my cup.

A while ago, after having a frustrating day dealing with some of life’s challenges, my father asked me a staggering question. “How deep does your trust go, Mary?” He wasn’t meaning trust in myself or anything trivial, but trust in something much greater. Trust in the Lord. He was asking, in the midst of life’s challenges, what would I choose? Would I choose shallow trust that won’t withstand the trials that are inevitably ahead? Or would I choose something deeper? Something wider.

While my life has been incredibly blessed and I hope to never take that for granted, I know and have experienced that life is full of challenges. Some small and some great. Inevitably, I cannot choose what is poured out. However, I can choose how I receive it. What I do with it. And so, when I stand at the cupboard, I don’t want to pick something delicate and beautiful to the eye. No, I want mine to be strong, wide, deep and ready for anything.

So, in the name of childhood lessons, homemade hot chocolate and deep cups,

I say, Take Me Back!

Happy Tuesday!

Tiffany’s Bridals | Dallas Wedding Photographer

She had a fairytale themed wedding so we wanted to find a location that was sort of ‘foresty’ and whimsical…not the easiest thing when you live in Dallas, TX. It’s like Alicia Keys sentiments toward NYC. “Concrete jungle where dreams are made of.” Except, maybe without the “where dreams are made of’ part. Don’t get me wrong, I sure enjoy my city but it’s not exactly teeming with naturey-goodness. Yes, I just said naturey-goodness. Dallas, however, surprised me and ‘made my dreams come true (cough cough notice what I did there) with a great location. I had such a blast shooting her bridal session and even though it was way too hot for comfort, she was a trooper. I have been dying to show these for months now and so I’m glad I can finally share these with you, Internet! Enjoy some of my favorites!

Happy Thursday!

Love this one.

Take Me Back Tuesday | The Beauty of Commonplace Things

We walked around the streets of New York like we belonged there…or at least that was our goal. We were three Oklahoma girls who had traveled up north for a girls trip to the Big Apple and we wanted to blend in as best as we could. By the time our trip was over, we had holes in our boots, memories for a lifetime and the subway system memorized. Ok, so maybe that’s not all true. We had the subway system MOSTLY memorized…cough cough. Yeah right.

It really was quite the memorable trip though, for so many different reasons (Some of them would make you laugh til your sides hurt but we don’t have time for that). Our first day, we set out to explore The Met. You noticed I didn’t say “The Metropolitan Museum of Art?” Yeah that’s because me and NYC…we are way too cool, too tight, too close for such formal talk. But I digress. We spent a few hours exploring the halls of such a beautiful museum until we ended up in the photography section. It was an exceptionally opportune time you see, because I had just purchased my first Canon DSLR and I was in heaven.  My camera felt like a stranger in my hands and yet like an old friend at the same time. I knew so little about the equipment I was carrying around throughout the streets of New York, but it didn’t matter. It was mine and the world was mine to capture.

My two best friends just sort of laughed and let me ‘do my thing’ all trip, but for me it was different. It was the beginning of a passion or really…more like the start of something I had always known. As we walked around the museum and looked at the beautiful photographs from artists much more talented than I will ever be, I stopped and stared at a quote on the wall.

“In my photographs I want to look at life — at the commonplace things as if I just turned a corner and ran into them for the first time.” -Leon Levinstein

As I stood there and read it, I was inspired. Inspired because, with my new camera in hand, I knew what he meant. My passion for photography comes not from the poised or the perfect, but from the real. From life. That is what I wanted to capture. Now, years later as my business is in full swing and that first DSLR has been left behind for much more ‘professional’ equipment, the temptation is to forget. However, today, I am reminded. Reminded to never lose sight of that inspiration. To never forget why I do what I do. Why I love to ‘photograph.’ Because the commonplace things make life the most beautiful.

So, in the name of The Met, Leon Levinstein and the beauty of commonplace things…

I say, Take Me Back!

Happy Tuesday!

Lauryn’s Bridals | Chestnut Square Village- Mckinney, TX

Mary Fields Photography

The wedding was in a week and a half. Lauryn had been serving faithfully in the heat at Kanakuk Kamps all summer and so we hadn’t had a chance to do her bridals. She flew in from Florida for a Labor Day wedding and quickly started getting her own wedding day plans in order. With no time to lose, we headed to my new favorite location in McKinney, TX. Chestnut Square Historic Village. It’s an old downtown square made up of restored homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Perfect for a bridal session. I may have been squealing with delight the whole time. Maybe. It felt like it was 1,000 degrees outside but Lauryn was a trooper. Maybe it was because she was used to the oppressive heat from working at a summer sports camp. Maybe though, and more likely, she was just so excited to be getting married to the love of her life! I can’t wait to share with you the pictures from Taylor and Lauryn’s beautiful downtown Dallas wedding, but until then enjoy some of my favorites from her bridal session!

Happy Wednesday!

(For those of you who are regular followers of the blog, I must apologize for dropping the ball on yesterday’s ‘Take Me Back Tuesday’ post. Life got the best of me but stay tuned for next week’s!)

One of my absolute favorites. Lauryn…you are stunning.

I told her to ‘think of all the things that Taylor would say to make her laugh right now.’ Taylor is never short on jokes.

So I may lose my breath every time I see these two. Seriously gorgeous. And that dress!!!!

Like I said, it’s my new favorite location.

Gah girl. Too much beauty.

The chapel at Chestnut Square. Brides, if you are looking for venues in the Dallas area…this is a great option!!!

So how perfect but Lauryn’s groom is named Taylor. One of the houses just happened to be named ‘The Taylor House.” A convenient coincidence for me…

This is when the light started to get really ‘yummy.’ If you are a previous client, you know what I’m talking about!

Love these! Such sweet, delicate images! Love your work! 🙂

Featured | Baby Baker Love

Good Morning Cyberspace!!!! No I haven’t had coffee today, I’m just excited to tell you about a fun blog that is featuring me today! If you love blogging, great writing and cute babies…you will love this. In college, I was lucky enough to live with some incredible women who are still, to this day, some of my best friends. We were the ‘Charles House Ladies’ (self-proclaimed) because our cute Oklahoma home was on Charles Street. Hailey and I lived together for almost two years before she married her wonderful husband and became Mrs. Baker. We always joked that they needed to start their ‘Baker’s Dozen’ and well, they have one down and 11 to go! After Hailey had her sweet son last December, she started a really great blog for their family to detail the ins and outs of their life together. When she contacted me recently to be a guest blogger, I was thrilled! Not only do I love her, but I love her blog. Even though I have yet to have children of my own, I love seeing how their life is unfolding with a little one in the house. So, make sure to head over to her site and check out my feature as well as her wonderful story-telling, writing and tales of Baby Baker Love!

Happy Thursday!
