Friday Tips and Tricks | Consider Moving…

Now don’t worry, I’m not moving nor really asking you to consider moving. Not literally anyway…

No, today’s Tips and Tricks post is indeed about moving but not the address kind. Let me explain.

On a wedding day, brides and grooms typically find themselves getting ready in small rooms or cluttered spaces. It is inevitable when you have a lot of people with a good amount of stuff and not a whole lot of time. The wedding venue may even have an adorable bridal suite that is cute to the eye but not the best when it comes to allowing great light for photos. They are often dark, cramped or just plain…plain. Then there is that shot that we all want. You know, the getting in to my dress as the day has finally become reality and the dress is what signifies it all. Or that shot of your best man helping you fix your tie. These are the shots that, though simple, communicate so much of the anticipation of the day. The preparation before the long awaited aisle. I love these shots and so over the years, I have learned to fight for them.

When I first started in wedding photography, I would notice that the rooms in which my clients were dressing were far from ideal. The lighting was horrible and there was usually a ton of clutter in the background. Being new to the whole gig, however, I would just simply smile and do my best with it. Unfortunately, those photos suffered. Not too long into establishing my business, though, I realized that my clients were hiring me for my expertise and so I was shortchanging them by holding my tongue. I learned that education is the best gift I can give my clients and from there, they can make their own decision. So, I started to do just that. Educate. I started sharing with my clients the reasons why that particular room was not the best to dress in and a funny thing happened…they began listening to me. At first, my clients get nervous about being seen or getting the dress dirty but I quickly reassure them of ways that I will prevent those things from happening. Sure, not all of them are comfortable with ‘moving’ BUT most are…and the pictures prove me right. Now, when I get to a bridal/groom suite, I immediately assess whether or not it will be a good place to do their prep photos. At that point, I begin to share why I think it would be good for us to move to another spot (a different room, closer to the window or even outside) and from there, they make their own decision.

So, whether you are a photographer, a bride/groom or even a future bride or groom, my tip for you today is to ‘consider moving.’ I promise it is worth the moving costs.

Happy Friday!

Behind the Lens | Work and Play | She’s a Dancing Photog

People always comment on how my assistants and I dance at weddings. Almost every wedding a member of the band or a guest will say, ‘Man, you all like to dance.’ Or they will make comments to my couples and say, ‘Your photographer was out there dancing!‘ It’s a fun fact about Mary Fields Photography…if we are gonna be at a reception almost every weekend…well, by golly we are gonna dance! Yes, I just said ‘by golly.’ My philosophy is that I get to work and party all in the same evening. Don’t worry now, I dance with my camera in my hand, which is a site to see, but you better believe that my toe is tapping as I’m shooting and I take a minute to Wobble with the best of them. In fact, at one wedding my assistant and I taught all the guests how to Cotton Eye Joe. Yep…you not only hire a wedding photographer but also a dance teacher. And you know what I’ve concluded? This is such a good picture of how I do business. I want people to hire someone that feels more like a friend and guest than a hired stranger. I work hard and yet…I want to celebrate with you. So just play me some Cupid Shuffle and I’ll ‘step to the left’ with you and ‘walk it by myself’…all while capturing those fun moments. Call it strange or unprofessional but it’s Mary Fields Photography and I wouldn’t do it any different.

See you on the dance floor!

Happy Friday!

Take Me Back Tuesday | Five Years, 2 Additions and She’s Headed Home

I remember it was bittersweet. We had just driven half way across the country so that I could move her in to her new home…in Orlando, FL. We’d had numerous hours to talk about life and how things would be different. We had never lived apart. There was that time in high school that I told her when we got to college, ‘There would be no strings attached.’ I thought it was time to spread my wings and just be me…not a twin. Well, that lasted all of about a day. I realized that I really liked the me that included her. So, we kept doing life together. This time, when I drove her across country, well this time it was for real…a bit of separation. And it was bittersweet. She drove me to the airport, walked me inside and waited til I had checked in. We walked to the gate, hugged goodbye and let more than a few tears fall from our eyes as we walked away. It was a place we had never really been. Apart. Now for some of you that aren’t a twin, ok a lot of you, this is probably a little hard to relate to…but you see, I had done life with this girl, well…my whole life. Don’t get me wrong, that was a very important step in establishing ourselves apart from one another. I wouldn’t trade these years for anything as they have allowed each of us to become who we are. Since she’s been gone, she met the love of her life and had a precious baby boy. I’ve started a business and made a whole new life for myself. They have been such fruitful years for us both and priceless. However, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want her closer. After all, we call each other almost every day…don’t judge.

Well, five years almost to the day, I’m so excited to say that I will be flying to Orlando to go GET HER and her wonderful little family. Yep, my twin sister, her hubby and their little boy are moving to Texas!!!! I can’t even believe it! I’m still in shock about  it all but God has orchestrated this move with such amazing grace and provision. He has opened up doors for their family in ways that only He can. I am just excited that those opportunities include only a 45 minute drive from yours truly! That day, five years ago, was so bittersweet but it has been a story of God’s faithfulness and it continues to be told!

So, in the name of God’s faithfulness and your best friend living close,

I Say, Take Me Back!

Behind the Lens | Let’s Be Adventurers

It’s hard to say when it all started, most likely it was a series of things, but I think I know one story that helps me understand it. I was little, like three, and up to that point I had been a pretty reserved child…according to my parents. I was a twin and so I had learned quickly that all of my life would be in comparison to my sister. She, being the carefree one, didn’t seem to mind that but I apparently wasn’t sure I wanted to compete. Anytime there could be any sort of competition between the two of us…I would just bow out. Not even try. My parents tell this story all the time when they try to explain me to people. I was a pretty surly and seemingly unhappy child until one day when we all went to a little fair in my hometown. There was a little caterpillar ride that I suppose could count as a roller coaster but, though I don’t exactly remember, I’m guessing it was nothing super terrifying. However, my twin sister didn’t want to go on it…she was too scared. (Sorry, Beth, don’t mean to throw you under the bus) Anyway, my parents say that it was a monumental moment in my life because it was as if they could see everything that was going on in my head. Here was an opportunity where I could overcome my own fear and do something that no one else would do. That wasn’t to say I wasn’t scared, I’m sure I was, but I could see the opportunity…so I took it. My parents say that I rode that little caterpillar all by myself and every time I passed them, they could see a giant smile on my face that simply communicated, ‘I’m loving this and I did it all by myself.’ My dad in particular remembers this moment and tells the story as a way to explain my personality. What’s funny is that I can totally relate to that little kid. I think there was something that happened in me that day that has shaped who I am today. You see, I love the thrill of doing things that I’ve never done before. Things that scare me. Things that are unknown. Places I’ve never been. People I’ve never met. Memories I have yet to make.

I have an insatiable desire to be an adventurer.

I have been told this often by the people who know me best…sometimes it’s a good thing and sometimes it’s not. At times, my need to adventure can cause me to never be still so I have to be careful but at the end of the day, I think this is central to who I am. Adventures may look different as life goes on but I never want to stop having them.

Here’s to being adventurers…

Happy Monday!

Park Cities Baptist Church Bridals | Abbie

Walker Bridals_0015

Oh, this sweet bride. I first met Abbie when she had just graduated high school and was serving at the same summer camp as me. I remember thinking she was the absolute cutest and so sweet. Fast forward almost ten years and here I am photographing her bridals!!! Crazy how my path as a wedding photographer allows me to stay connected with all kinds of people. I love it. Abbie made the most beautiful bride, partly because she is gorgeous but mostly because she has the most beautiful heart. She cares for people so well and is incredibly genuine. We had a blast shooting these and I can’t wait to share more of her beautiful wedding to the love of her life. Until then, enjoy some  favorites of mine from her bridal session!

Happy Friday!
