Friday Tips and Tricks | Consider Moving…

Now don’t worry, I’m not moving nor really asking you to consider moving. Not literally anyway…

No, today’s Tips and Tricks post is indeed about moving but not the address kind. Let me explain.

On a wedding day, brides and grooms typically find themselves getting ready in small rooms or cluttered spaces. It is inevitable when you have a lot of people with a good amount of stuff and not a whole lot of time. The wedding venue may even have an adorable bridal suite that is cute to the eye but not the best when it comes to allowing great light for photos. They are often dark, cramped or just plain…plain. Then there is that shot that we all want. You know, the getting in to my dress as the day has finally become reality and the dress is what signifies it all. Or that shot of your best man helping you fix your tie. These are the shots that, though simple, communicate so much of the anticipation of the day. The preparation before the long awaited aisle. I love these shots and so over the years, I have learned to fight for them.

When I first started in wedding photography, I would notice that the rooms in which my clients were dressing were far from ideal. The lighting was horrible and there was usually a ton of clutter in the background. Being new to the whole gig, however, I would just simply smile and do my best with it. Unfortunately, those photos suffered. Not too long into establishing my business, though, I realized that my clients were hiring me for my expertise and so I was shortchanging them by holding my tongue. I learned that education is the best gift I can give my clients and from there, they can make their own decision. So, I started to do just that. Educate. I started sharing with my clients the reasons why that particular room was not the best to dress in and a funny thing happened…they began listening to me. At first, my clients get nervous about being seen or getting the dress dirty but I quickly reassure them of ways that I will prevent those things from happening. Sure, not all of them are comfortable with ‘moving’ BUT most are…and the pictures prove me right. Now, when I get to a bridal/groom suite, I immediately assess whether or not it will be a good place to do their prep photos. At that point, I begin to share why I think it would be good for us to move to another spot (a different room, closer to the window or even outside) and from there, they make their own decision.

So, whether you are a photographer, a bride/groom or even a future bride or groom, my tip for you today is to ‘consider moving.’ I promise it is worth the moving costs.

Happy Friday!
