Dallas Lakefront Engagement | Amie + Jack

Ellis_0021

Oh, these two. I love when couples let their their engagement session be a time to just enjoy being together. It’s the one part of wedding planning that is simply about the relationship between two people in love. Well, maybe it was because they live oceans apart and were finally together again but let me tell you, the early morning hours of their sunrise session didn’t hinder the happiness between these two lovebirds. It was so easy to capture them ‘being them’ because their love for one another was so easy. We laughed a LOT during this sunrise session. Amie and Jack have so much fun together and don’t take things too seriously. They grew up in the same ‘city’ but given the size of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex they didn’t have any interaction until they both decided to go to the Air Force Academy in Colorado. He interviewed her for a job during their time at the Academy and thought she was really cute. So, he eventually took her on a date. They both laughed about that date when telling me about it as it didn’t really go anywhere. It just wasn’t the right time. Since they were just friends at that point, they thought they’d go their separate ways after graduation. When they were stationed at the same base though, their friendship grew and so did their interest in one another. Their paths soon took them overseas on an assignment and they fell in love. She was then moved to Germany and he back to the States but by that point, distance was just a circumstance. So, when she flew in to spend a vacation with his family in Colorado, he asked her to be his bride.

I loved watching these two and how they interact. They make each other laugh and it’s easy to see how being together makes them able to fully be themselves. I actually have known Jack for a few years and we even met at the Air Force Academy through an event I was putting on through Kanakuk Kamps. I’m sure at that point he had already met Amie but he had no idea that she would become his wife. How special that I now get to cross paths with him again and capture the love he has for the his future bride. One of my favorite parts of my job is getting to reconnect with people through the art of photography and capturing life’s greatest moments. I can’t wait for their June wedding and to see how their story continues to unfold.

Enjoy some of my favs from their sunrise engagement session!

Labor and Delivery | Little Winnie Mae

WINNIEMAE_0039

Words can’t even really express what a privilege this was. It was a totally new experience for me and one that I found to be so special. It reminded me why I love photography…because it captures and tells the story of life. Those words became so literal a few months ago when I got to photograph life itself as one of my previous couples asked me to capture the birth of their daughter. You may remember Dexter and Meggie as they graced my blog a few years ago with one of the sweetest and most intimate weddings I have photographed to date. We had first met in a Starbucks for a consultation, followed by a fun engagement and bridal session and then of course their beautiful wedding day. Each time I was around them, I became more and more convinced that they were the coolest. They loved each other well, made me feel like their best friend and through it all, didn’t take themselves too seriously. I got to see how much their friends loved them, how their families cherished them and how they were crazy about each other. They live their lives with purpose and they bring an incredible amount of warmth to all that they encounter. All that being said, when I found out that they were welcoming a little one into their family, I was thrilled! They were going to make the greatest parents. Then, when Meggie asked me to consider being there to capture the labor and delivery, I was so honored. I had never done this kind of session before but the thought of capturing such a beautiful event got me so excited. I’ve taken so many photos in my career. Countless! I’ve captured couples preparing for marriage, brides and grooms saying I Do, families as they grow, and so much more. This, however, well this was different. To have the chance to capture God’s great miracle of life was something totally unique and as I stood there in the delivery room, I shed some tears behind my lens. I was so overwhelmed at the gift and miracle of life but I was also so aware of what a privilege my job is. I got to experience a new side of photography and it brought a freshness to this thing that I ‘do.’ At least a fresh perspective. What a joy to have walked with this couple through so many different seasons of life and to document it for them. Capturing life is why I started this whole thing 5 years ago and I am so honored that I still be doing just that. Here’s to the greatest couples and to telling their stories through my lens!

Congrats to Dexter and Meggie on welcoming their little girl, Winnie, into the world! Meggie was a rockstar and Dexter was an amazing coach through it all. He kept us all laughing with his great humor…a true gift to a woman in labor! I still can’t believe that they gave me this great honor and I hope these pictures will be cherished keepsakes for years to come. As a side note, these two are so dearly loved and it was incredibly evident by the number of family and friends that waited hours in the waiting room just to celebrate with them. Such a sweet and wonderful little family!

Enjoy some of my favs from this special day!

Tips and Tricks | Pay Attention to the Details

Whether you have been dreaming about it since you were a little girl or whether you just started thinking about it once the ring was on your finger, the details are an intricate part of any wedding day. You may love simple or you may love elaborate, either way, the details serve to give insight in to your style and personality. As a photographer I am here to tell you, THE DETAILS MATTER! Here are some tips on how to select details for your special day.

  1. Colors– pick cohesive colors that you LOVE and carry them throughout the entire design of the day. It will make for a beautifully styled day and a beautiful album later on.  Detials_0076
  2. Jewelry– Be YOU when it comes to jewelry but also know that jewelry can add SO much to your photos. Don’t be afraid of pieces that make a statement. Consider changing up necklaces for the reception if you want a simpler one for the ceremony. Detials_0073
  3. Veil/Headpiece– Veils make things so beautifully bridal! However, if you aren’t a veil person, consider a headpiece that could add an elegance to your day.  Detials_0074
  4. Shoes– Your shoes can add SUCH a fun addition to your day and your photos. Since not everyone will see your shoes, don’t be afraid to be BOLD and add in some fun color.  If your dress is off-white make sure NOT to choose white shoes! 5. Table Centerpieces- Beautiful centerpieces add so much to your day and your photos. We don’t all have an unlimited budget so don’t stress! There are so many ways to get creative as you design beautiful centerpieces without breaking the bank. Detials_0078
  6. Flowers- Flowers can be very expensive but there are also very cost-effective ways to do them. They really can transform your wedding photos so if possible, they are definitely worth the investment. Detials_0079
  7. Displaying Your Dress- Your dress is one of the most important details of the wedding day so make sure to show it off well by putting it on an aesthetically pleasing hanger! Detials_0070
  8. Get Creative– The details of a wedding/reception allow you to make this wonderful day specific to you as a couple so don’t be afraid to get creative and have fun with it! One of the things I am always sad about is when brides just do what they have seen their friends do. While this is certainly easy, it leaves no room for individuality so don’t be afraid to be different. It may take some thought and work, but I promise, you won’t regret it! Detials_0077
