Labor and Delivery | Little Winnie Mae

Words can’t even really express what a privilege this was. It was a totally new experience for me and one that I found to be so special. It reminded me why I love photography…because it captures and tells the story of life. Those words became so literal a few months ago when I got to photograph life itself as one of my previous couples asked me to capture the birth of their daughter. You may remember Dexter and Meggie as they graced my blog a few years ago with one of the sweetest and most intimate weddings I have photographed to date. We had first met in a Starbucks for a consultation, followed by a fun engagement and bridal session and then of course their beautiful wedding day. Each time I was around them, I became more and more convinced that they were the coolest. They loved each other well, made me feel like their best friend and through it all, didn’t take themselves too seriously. I got to see how much their friends loved them, how their families cherished them and how they were crazy about each other. They live their lives with purpose and they bring an incredible amount of warmth to all that they encounter. All that being said, when I found out that they were welcoming a little one into their family, I was thrilled! They were going to make the greatest parents. Then, when Meggie asked me to consider being there to capture the labor and delivery, I was so honored. I had never done this kind of session before but the thought of capturing such a beautiful event got me so excited. I’ve taken so many photos in my career. Countless! I’ve captured couples preparing for marriage, brides and grooms saying I Do, families as they grow, and so much more. This, however, well this was different. To have the chance to capture God’s great miracle of life was something totally unique and as I stood there in the delivery room, I shed some tears behind my lens. I was so overwhelmed at the gift and miracle of life but I was also so aware of what a privilege my job is. I got to experience a new side of photography and it brought a freshness to this thing that I ‘do.’ At least a fresh perspective. What a joy to have walked with this couple through so many different seasons of life and to document it for them. Capturing life is why I started this whole thing 5 years ago and I am so honored that I still be doing just that. Here’s to the greatest couples and to telling their stories through my lens!

Congrats to Dexter and Meggie on welcoming their little girl, Winnie, into the world! Meggie was a rockstar and Dexter was an amazing coach through it all. He kept us all laughing with his great humor…a true gift to a woman in labor! I still can’t believe that they gave me this great honor and I hope these pictures will be cherished keepsakes for years to come. As a side note, these two are so dearly loved and it was incredibly evident by the number of family and friends that waited hours in the waiting room just to celebrate with them. Such a sweet and wonderful little family!

Enjoy some of my favs from this special day!
