Dallas Heritage Village Bridals | Casey

View More: http://maryfieldsphotography.pass.us/castellaw-bridals-2014

Sometimes my job is just way too easy and this session was one of those times. Casey is a naturally gorgeous person and that is matched with the sweetest inner beauty as well. She simply radiates joy and I had so much fun doing her bridal session a few weeks ago. If you have followed the blog much to see some of my behind the scenes shots, you know that I often times shoot with a stool so as to compensate for me being vertically challenged. When I first met Casey though, I was thrilled to find that she is my exact height of a whoppin 5’2″, making our session a lot of fun for me and leaving my stool a bit lonely for once! Probably one of my favorite parts of her bridal session though, was the fact that not only did her sweet mother come along with us but also her equally as sweet father. He is the first ever father to come on a bridal session and I LOVED it. Casey’s parents are some of the absolute dearest people making it easy to see how it runs in the family. There were so many sweet tearful and joyful moments between the three of them as the session unfolded that I too found myself joyfully tearing up with them. In a nutshell, it was everything I love about photography, marriage and family.

This beautiful bride married her handsome groom this past Saturday and I was so privileged to celebrate with them. I can’t wait to share more of their special day but until then, I’m excited to finally reveal these beautiful bridals! Enjoy!

Happy Monday!

I’ll close with these images because they make me so happy! This family knows the way to my heart by incorporating the sweetest bit of sentiment. Casey’s mother wore her sister’s wedding dress in her own wedding and then Casey took that same dress and had it altered to wear to her rehearsal dinner. They had me take a quick picture of her in it to be displayed with her aunt’s and mother’s pictures at the wedding reception. For this sentimental soul, I LOVE this idea! Not to mention, it is a gorgeous dress! View More: http://maryfieldsphotography.pass.us/castellaw-bridals-2014

Can I ask where Casey got her dress or the designer? It’s stunning!

Skye - September 2, 2014 - 4:37 pm

I would love to know where Casey got her dress.

This is a Pasadena gown by Watters. The bride bought it at a bridal store in Plano, TX called Stardust! She added the lace sleeves.

Friday Tips and Tricks | How to Dress for Engagement Portraits

Daniel_0040
One of the most consistent questions I get from clients is what they should wear for their portrait/engagement session. I get it so often that I have a drafted few paragraphs to send to them so that it’s easy to send out. So, on this Friday, I thought I would do another installment of ‘Friday Tips and Tricks’ concerning how to dress for portrait/engagement sessions. Here are a few tips as you prepare:
1. RELAX- Don’t stress too much about what to wear. I promise it will be fine so don’t over think it. After all, what really matters is WHO is captured in the photo and not what you’re wearing.
Kettler_0048
2. COORDINATE- Now, once you have allowed yourself to relax, it is good to coordinate what the two of you (or group of you) will wear. I will often times encourage my clients to lay it out and see how each outfit goes together.

3. COMPLIMENT DON’T MATCH- I am oh so passionate about this! When in life would you intentionally dress alike with your spouse/fiance/family? If the goal is to capture people authentically, then matching is NOT authentic! In my opinion,  it’s best for you to be in complimentary outfits/colors and not matching. The all white shirt gig is just not the best to photograph and honestly has very little dimension. That is why, I recommend for one of you to be in a print if the other is in a solid. It will be more complimentary and spice things up!

4. USE THE COLOR WHEEL- That’s right, I’m telling you to go back to 3rd grade art class and pull out the color wheel. Or really, just Google one. This is SO helpful when planning out outfits for portraits as it allows you to accomplish Tip #3. For example, blue looks really great with orange. Orange also looks good with purple. Colors that are on the opposite sides of the color wheel are great places to start. *As a side note, it is best to stay away from neutral colors (white, blacks, browns, grays) and horizontal stripes. They don’t usually photograph well!

5. DON’T BE SHY- I always tell my clients to feel like themselves but also not to be afraid to be a little bold. Some of the best pictures have the most personality so put some of your personality in to the session! A bright color, bold jewelry, colored shoes, or a fun hat can always add great dimension to a photograph and tell a better story! So don’t be afraid to be a little daring.

6. GO WITH THE SEASON- This is important to remember because different seasons will help you know how to dress. If it is winter, most likely you are going to need the help of some colorful outfits to counterbalance the general dullness of cold months. If it is spring, however, the trees and grass will carry a lot of color and you can afford to tone it down a little if that is more your style. Color is a beautiful thing in photography but it can be found in other places besides clothing.

7. BE TRUE TO YOU-  My number one goal in an engagement/portrait session is to capture people as THEM. So, as you/we plan your session, be thinking of how you could be more comfortable. The point is to have FUN, make a memory and to get great images! You want to look and feel like yourself. Make sure that your outfits match the two of you and your personalities. After all, the beauty lies in documenting who you are!
Callier_0033
Your portrait session should be FUN! So enjoy it!
Happy Friday!

Take Me Back Tuesday | It Feels Like Yesterday

JudeBirthday_0007 It feels like yesterday.

As a kid, this was a phrase I so often associated with older people whose nostalgia made time seem to operate differently than those of us who had yet to hit adulthood. It was matched with phrases like, ‘When I was your age’ and ‘Back when I was a kid.’ When you are a kid these phrases seem silly and distant from anything that is relevant in your life. You are a child and to children, days go slow, weeks drag on and years…well years feel like they take forever. It’s funny how time is a constant and yet somehow it is also ever-changing, depending on your perspective and season of life. I wish I had the words to explain this phenomenon but I don’t. I simply know that I’ve hit that stage of adulthood where ‘it feels like yesterday.’ Significant life events are happening and as time passes on, the gap between the present and that particular memory seems to be shortening beyond explanation.

I had a significant ‘like yesterday’ moment this past weekend as I celebrated the life of my oldest nephew. He was turning 1 years old and so I flew to Florida to celebrate with him and  my sister. Some blog followers may remember that Jude was born on my birthday (which is also his mother’s birthday) last year and I flew to Florida last-minute to be there for his arrival. It was a day that I will cherish forever and we have consequently dubbed ourselves the Birthday Trio. I remember sitting with the two of them on our birthday last year and just feeling overwhelmed at the specialness of that moment. Last Saturday, as we sang that sweet little boy ‘Happy Birthday,’ I sat feeling overwhelmed again at how time literally does fly. How could it have been a year since the Birthday Trio was born? It felt like the blink of an eye. Crazy. Well, since I have apparently reached ‘that age’ where you feel like time is on steroids, I suppose the best thing to do is to enjoy the moments as they quickly pass by. So today, I’m sharing with you some of my ‘enjoyed moments’ as they become yesterday’s fondest memories.

So, in the name of ‘feeling like yesterday’ and sweet birthdays,

I Say, Take Me Back!

(My sister threw him the cutest ‘little man’ party. So adorable.)

Behind the Lens | 4 Birthdays & 3 People I Love Dearly

April in my family is apparently the month of birthdays and I’m not complaining since I am one of them! My older sister, Allison, was born two years and one day before my twin sister and I. We always joke because when we were growing up we had to alternate years of who got a party so that my parents didn’t go crazy. That means that I am like 10 birthday parties behind in life in case anyone wants to volunteer to eradicate that. Anyone? Well, anyway, then our little birthday cluster got more exciting when last April 18th at 7 pm my twin sister, Beth, went in to labor. Either way, this child was going to be born on someone’s birthday and sure enough, Jude Wallace came in to the world late morning on April 19th. Creating what we now lovingly call ‘The Birthday Trio.’ Thus, mid-April is an action packed time in my fam and I love it. So on this birthday weekend, I wanted to give a little shout out to each one of my April Birthday Quadruplets…

Jude- Oh, how the tears well up when I think of the day I met you. I had just traveled all morning to get there to see you and when I walked in to the room, tears began freely flowing. They told me you were a boy and that your name was Jude Wallace. They put you in my arms and I melted. Positively just melted. How could I love someone so much that I had just met?!? A feeling I felt not long after when your cousin was born. I already loved sharing a birthday with your mother and I felt so special to share that day with you too. Over the last year you have made me laugh countless times with your big gummy smile and your sweet laugh. You have been on the move since the beginning…making your newborn pictures practically impossible by the way. Don’t worry though, you can make it up to me later when we have lots of fun taking pictures. I love you so dearly and can’t wait to see you grow up. I pray that you grow up to know Jesus and that you follow Him with all your heart. I pray that you laugh a LOT and that we get to make lots of memories laughing together. Happy Birthday, my sweet nephew!

To Do_0004

Allison- More tears. I suppose this outs me as a ‘weeper’ but I’m ok with that. Oh, how blessed I am to have you as an older sister. God was so gracious in that and I don’t thank Him enough for it. You have been such a picture of godliness to me and I am thankful for that example. Your love for life, your quick wit and the way you can make everyone feel at ease is amazing. Truly. As someone who isn’t always the best at being silly, I love that this is not true of you. You are hilarious…let’s be honest. God has gifted you in so many ways that bless the lives of others. You are compassionate and tender-hearted in ways that lend to mercy and grace. You are a loving and supportive wife and a wonderful mother! When I think of you, I am so thankful that I can say that you are one of my best friends and that I love doing life not far behind you. I can’t wait to see what this next chapter of life holds for you and how God will use you to impact others. You are a gem, sister, and I am so privileged to call you such.

To Do_0006

Beth- Funny, no tears. JK…always tears. There is so much I could say to you. So very much. I remember writing my Maid of Honor speech for your wedding and thinking, ‘How do you sum up a friendship that ‘never wasn’t’ in to a speech?’ That is so true of us. We were never not friends. We have never NOT known each other and when I think about that, I smile. There is no one that knows me better and there is no one that listens better than you do. It’s funny how we never run out of things to talk about…even at 2 am. Remember that time we were on a road trip and listened to exactly 14 seconds of a CD and then just talked the whole way there? One of my favorite memories. Even though we are miles apart, you’re still ‘my person’ to call in the car, even if we have already talked that day. We are so weird but I wouldn’t change it. As I said in my speech, to say you are my best friend is a severe understatement. Those two words just can’t encompass what God has given me in you and so instead of trying to put it in to words, I will just thank Him for such a gift. You are a blessing to me, gemela, in more ways than I even know. Happy Birthday to us and here’s to another year of growth in Christ as we do this thing called life. Wouldn’t want to share the day or life with anyone else.

Take Me Back Tuesday | The Birthday Trio Reunited

Oh, I’m so excited I can’t even stand it! Like, for real. (yes, I just used a Valley Girl ‘like’ on this blog. No shame). This post is going to be pretty short because well…I’m about to head to Florida where I will be reunited with two of my favorite people in the whole world. My best friend, look alike and forever birthday sharer. AND my sweet little nephew, one major delight of my life and ALSO my forever birthday sharer! Can a girl have a better week?!?! I suggest that she cannot!

Oh happy day. Not only do I get to share my birthday celebrations with these two dearly loved individuals but I also get to spend the week playing in the Florida sunshine and even a little Disney magic. I may just be like a little kid on Christmas Eve. So eager I just can’t stand it! I’m gonna wrap that little man up in my arms and never let him go. Not to mention, we may just have a little birthday celebration for all three of us in the process. I haven’t seen my sister and her family since Christmas, which may not seem like long to you all, but to this girl that is FOREVER! My relationship with my twin sister can’t even be fully encompassed by the words ‘best friend’ and so being away from her is no fun at all. When she had my nephew, it just got worse. Last time I was there, the three of us took off to the beach (my favorite place to go) and spent a few hours just digging our toes in the sand and watching a precious little boy experience the ocean for the first time. It’s one of my favorites memories with both of them and I hope we have many more like that to come.

So, in the name of the Birthday Trio, Florida Sunshine and Long-Awaited Reunions,

I Say, Take Me Back!
