One of my favorite things about being a wedding photographer is getting to celebrate with people as they have one of the biggest celebrations of their lives. I find it such a privilege to be with two people in private moments that hold so much significance, especially on a day that is so significant. I have photographed countless weddings and yet that part never gets old…celebrating with people as they celebrate. However, what I love even more than this is getting to celebrate with people who I’ve known before they were even an us. I love this because it means that I’ve seen their journey, if even a glimpse, and so I am that much more excited about being part of the day that starts a new adventure.
I met Abbie first. It was my first summer at Kanakuk Kamps and I thought she was the most delightfully genuine person. I met Thomas a few years later and I remember thinking he was possibly one of the most personable people I’d ever met. Both of them share an important trait that I think makes them such a dynamic couple. They both love and care for people in a way that is rare. Very rare.
They met through Kanakuk as well and both spent a year at the Kanakuk Institute. At the end of it, he asked her on a date and she, being pretty surprised, said yes. He was immediately smitten and was ready to do anything to win this beautiful girl over. Abbie was in charge of running the kamp kitchen that summer and I can still remember watching Thomas serve behind the counter with her day after day, wanting to show her how much he cared about her. Well, at the end of the summer she was ready to see where this relationship would go so they began dating long distance. She found herself working in youth ministry in Waco, TX and he was doing the same…only he was in Kansas City, MO. Distance is never fun but when it’s worth it, it’s worth it. These two found it was definitely worth it and after a few years and lots of miles, Thomas asked her to be his bride.
Their wedding day was one for the record books…literally. It was in mid-July in Texas and it was 75 DEGREES! Perfect. Their friends and family came to celebrate the happy couple and I just might have shed a couple tears behind the camera as Abbie walked down the aisle. Mostly because Thomas was wiping tears away from his own eyes. It was a beautiful day.
Thomas and Abbie, what a joy it was for me to celebrate with you two having known you both before you were an ‘us.’ It’s a reminder to me of God’s goodness to His children and He has been so good to you both! I can’t wait to see where you go as a married couple and the lives you change! You are both such wonderful examples of what it looks like to love people well. Thanks for letting me part of your day!
