‘TMB’ Tuesday | Minor Pains of a Photographer + My Prescription

Yesterday I had my first Physical Therapy session. Yep, in some ways I feel special to be in the PT club and in others, I wish I had never been initiated. You see, as many joys as I have being a photographer (and believe me, I have a lot) there are unfortunately a few pains. I’m sure it is that way with every job but mine are revealing themselves to be a bit more literal. It all started about a year ago when business really started to get crazy…in a good way. I began to notice that my knees would every so often scream at me in rebellion as I bent down to get that ‘money shot.’ Then my shoulder would take every effort to make itself heard as I photographed a wedding for 12 straight hours. Then every so often, my back would refuse to be in a good mood. It’s quite comical really…or I just have an interesting sense of humor. Regardless, these were minor things that will not stop me from doing what I love but needed to be dealt with.

So, I visited an orthopedic and then a physical therapist. Their two diagnoses was that I am small in proportion to the gear I carry (shout out to all you shorties out there) and that I probably need to slow down. Believe it or not, both of those things I will have a hard time changing, though I’m trying! My size is God-given and my schedule is a product of the fact that I love what I do and I LOVE to be busy. Needing to take care of myself though, I have come to two conclusions. One, I am going to do my best to exercise more frequently (in addition to PT) so as to build up muscle to counter-balance the gear I carry. Watch out…I just may turn in to a body builder. Cough Cough. (sarcasm at its finest). Two, when my physical therapist said “You should slow down,” I definitely heard, “You should probably take a vacation and go lay on a beach somewhere.” Yeah, that’s what she was really saying. Just trying to be a compliant patient and fulfill doctor’s orders. Right?! That is why, for today’s Take Me Back, I thought it only fitting, in the name of my health, that I dream of being taken back to the beach!!!!

So, in the name of physical therapy, being small in stature but big in heart and beach medicine,

I Say, Take Me Back!

If you need me, I’ll probably be searching for flights and packing my cutest swimsuit with a good book. If only…

[…] Every year I do a post with images that my second shooters have taken of me ‘behind the scenes.’ It is honestly one of my favorite posts of the year because well, it’s hilarious. I keep a running collection of photos throughout the year and then break them out once a year so that the rest of the world can laugh with me at how ridiculous I am. Even though it is not the end of 2013, I thought I might break out a couple of these images just to give some insight in to how I got the ‘pains’ that I mentioned in this week’s Take Me Back Tuesday post. If you haven’t read it, check it out here. […]
