Take Me Back Tuesday | I Miss Mayberry

Call me old fashioned. Call me out of date. Call me a fuddy duddy (yes I just said that). Call me whatever you want…but I miss Mayberry.

I grew up watching the Andy Griffith show, one of the greatest shows ever made. If you haven’t seen it, you will have no idea what I’m talking about or what in the world ‘Mayberry’ is. I at least know that I’m not a complete nerd because Rascal Flatts apparently is singing my same tune in their song, ‘Mayberry,” as they put perfect melody to my thoughts in saying,

Well, I miss Mayberry
Sitting on the porch drinking
Ice cold Cherry Coke
Where everything is black and white
Picking on a six string
Where people pass by and you call
Them by their first name
Watching the clouds roll by
Bye, bye

Mayberry is the home town of Andy Griffith and his gang and it represents so many things that I value. People know each other’s names. Life is slow. Life is wholesome and pure. It’s idyllic. Well, I realize that I am throwing myself under the bus as a total ‘lame-o,’ but you know, I don’t care. I miss Mayberry and last night was a taste of it.

When I lived here in Branson, MO, this sweet family I got to live with had a great tradition. Every full moon we would load up in the car, no matter what day it was, get a tasty treat along the way and sit up on the hill to watch the full moon. It was all inspired by an old Disney song entitled ‘Mickie and Minnie on a Moonlit Night,’ which we would belt at the top of our lungs along the way. Eventually, this tradition turned in to a neighborhood favorite. Well last night was a full moon and it was EPIC. We took a whole Kanakuk Kamps bus, drove around the neighborhood honking and picking up neighbors as we sang the whole way to get sno cones. It would have been so strange to the average onlooker and yet it was the ‘greatest thing since sliced bread’ in my eyes. It was the greatest, you see, because it was Mayberry.

So, in the name of Mayberry, sno cones, bus rides and moonlit nights,

I Say, Take Me Back!

(Today’s post isn’t about the photography…it’s about the message behind the photography…so please excuse the iphone photos! Special shout out to Allison for letting me use her iphone.)

Mary,
I love Mayberry too! Did you know you can go to the town where Andy Griffith was born, Mt. Airy, NC, and tour an actual set of Mayberry, including the courthouse, the Darlins truck, Wally’s Service Station and all. It’s an absolute blast.
Great memories for me with this post, and I couldn’t agree with you more.
Blessings,
Debi
