Friday Tips and Tricks | The Importance of Flowers

Today’s tips and tricks post is hopefully helpful but also FUN to look through! In the years that I have been a wedding photographer, I have come to realize that flowers can truly make a wedding day go from ‘pretty‘ to ‘woooooahh. hold up. gorgeous.‘ Yep…it’s true. Now, I know that everyone planning a wedding is on some sort of budget and flowers can be one of the most expensive things on the list. Believe me, this girl considers herself to be fairly thrifty (a nice way of saying cheap) so I definitely understand the need to cut costs in places. At first, I thought the flowers didn’t matter much as all flowers are pretty. However, the more and more that I photograph florals, the more and more I am convinced that this is not true. A bouquet of flowers that is unique, vibrant and gorgeous adds SO much to a couple’s wedding photos, taking them from pretty to just plain stunning. See this example below…isn’t the right one 10x more stunning?!?!? And that bouquet is to die for.

Now, this is not to say that your budget for florals needs to be outrageous but I am more encouraging brides to find ways to reapportion the budget to allow for some space in the floral category. Maybe this means repurposing bridesmaid bouquets for table centerpieces/decorations. Maybe it means working with a florist who is not as well-known but is cheaper. Maybe it means buying wholesale and making the bouquets yourself. Pinterest, people. Pinterest. One of my best friends is a wedding planner/florist and I have spent many hours making bouquets with her. It’s hard but definitely doable! Whatever it is, I do highly recommend investing just a tad bit more into your florals so as to make your wedding photos that much more dynamic. I’ll leave you with a few short things to think about when selecting your florals…and then enjoy some of my floral favs from recent weddings! Get ready to swoon!

1. Don’t be afraid of color: I know that a lot of brides want the traditional all white bouquet and this is fine if it’s what you have always wanted. However, I guarantee that adding a dynamic of color and texture to your bouquet will significantly change the overall effect. Bold can be beautiful!

2. Pick something unique– Oh how I believe in this! Even if it is just a unique component to your bouquet, uniqueness will make a difference. Roses are beautiful but feathers, berries, and ivy can add a special flare to your bouquet!

3. Watch out for hydrangeas– Hydrangeas are a beautiful and affordable flower. They serve most often as a great ‘filler’ flower, but word to the wise…they can die quickly! This is especially true if you are getting married in the summer. If the hydrangeas are supported by other flowers in the arrangement, they can make it but an entire bouquet of these and they’ll be wilting before the ceremony ends!

4. Do your research– I know it will take time, but check out multiple florists in the area, both established and new, to see their costs and style. Even consider meeting with them in person before selecting to see what they would envision for your wedding and how they would do it. Pick someone who will go the extra mile!

5. Expensive isn’t the only option– Reasons why #4 is important! There a lot of flowers that will be bold and beautiful without breaking your bank. It will just take an knowledgable florist to know them! Sure peonies are beautiful and therefore expensive, but there are a lot of other flowers that can be gorgeous without taking up your whole budget. Ask around!

6. Asymmetrical is better– The most beautiful bouquets that I have photographed are not perfect in their symmetry! What is aesthetically pleasing is more the compilation not perfect construction. Similar to life…

If you are in the DFW area, these three florists are some that I highly recommend!

Stems of Dallas– These ladies are just the best! For real. The work they produce is A-mazing every time.

GRO Designs- They are a mix of floral and event design and let me tell you, they are crazy good. Every time I see their work, I am amazed at the uniqueness. They are worth looking at for both floral and event planning!

Garden Gate Floral– I shot a wedding recently where I drooled over the florals the whole night. Seriously. Garden Gate did their bouquets and I was so impressed!

There are so many more but these are just a few suggestions!

Happy ‘Floral’ Friday!

One of my all time favorites…which is why it’s on a canvas in my office! Love those berries!

Another all-time fav.
