Friday Tips and Tricks | The First Look

Now, I know that reading this title, some of you have already said in your head, ‘Mary, there is NO way that you will convince me. I have dreamt of that moment my whole life… seeing my spouse-to-be at the end of the aisle. I will not change my mind and see them before.’ Well, I would say to you. RELAX and READ! I am not trying to take away from you the moment you have always dreamt about. Not if it is that important to you. All I want to do is EDUCATE. (When I get teachery, I start using all CAPS to stress my points). For real though, never do I push a first look on my couples as I know that their wedding day is not about me. If you are a photographer, I highly recommend this approach. Don’t push something on your clients simply because you prefer it. After all, it’s not your wedding day. Instead, explain the pros and cons so that they can make an educated decision on what is best for them and their day.

With that said, I DO believe that there are a LOT of benefits to a first look (if you aren’t sure what that is…I explain below). That is why I created an informational page on my site for couples so that they can understand how a First Look works and better understand why it can often times be a beneficial thing. Here are my short Friday Tips and Tricks…

For Photographers– Never be pushy but educate your clients on why a First Look could be a good option for them. This is especially important when talking through their wedding schedule. Often times, couples won’t think through the loss of natural light in relationship with their ceremony start time. A First Look will eliminate this problem without them having to change the start time of the ceremony.

For Brides/Grooms– Educate yourselves on the pros and cons of a First Look with an open mind. At the end of the day, though, do what is best for you as a couple. If you opt not to do a First Look, be very conscientious of the start time of your ceremony in relationship to the setting of the sun.

Here is the page I added yesterday on my site concerning the First Look. You can also view it here.

Happy Friday!
