Friday Thoughts : A Marriage That Lasts

Every weekend I find myself immersed in white lace and promises. Pearls and wedding bands. Champagne toasts and bouquets. Yep, I make a living documenting one of the world’s most sacred ceremonies. It’s a privilege, really, and I love it. However, because it’s an every weekend occurrence (and sometimes twice in one weekend), I can become numb to the significance of that union. Marriage is a gift from God. A beautiful relationship between a man and a woman. A rich treasure.

But it’s hard work and it takes commitment.

Though I’m not married, it’s not hard to see these things. Sure, it’s not the glamorous idea of marriage that we would all like to hold on to…but it’s the truth. This past week I had an incredible experience that reminded me of such things. An experience that taught me just how much of a long journey marriage is, yet…how much it is worth it. My grandparents are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary in September and I had the joy of filming them talk about their family history, their faith and their journey of marriage. It was one of the sweetest memories. They sat on the couch and laughed, teased each other in a 16 year-old flirtatious kind way and talked about life together…all while holding hands. As someone who sees couples at the starting line every week, it was an incredible encouragement to witness two people who have been running the race for a very long time. Side by side. Hand in hand. A committed team. Still very much in love.

On this Friday, as I head out to shoot back to back weddings, I am grateful for such an incredible example of godliness, marriage and devotion. Here’s to running the race with your spouse, come what may, and crossing that finish line.

Happy Friday!
