FREE ETSY GIFT CARD | Mary Fields’ Fall Giveaway Week | Wednesday

It’s time for Wednesday’s giveaway announcement! With the fall being the most popular time to get engaged, today’s topic is wedding related. If you read the blog, you know that I love traditions and sentiment…a little too much. One of my favorite traditions is including Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue. You may not know this but historically, the old represented a bride’s past, the new represented her happy future, the borrowed was to represent borrowed happiness and the blue represents purity, love and fidelity. Who knew? I love the unique things people use for this tradition. So, leave me a comment concerning the cool things you/your bride/a friend used OR what you WOULD use for the tradition of something old, new, borrowed and blue. The winner will receive a $25 Etsy gift card!

Also, I huge thank you to everyone that wrote in for yesterday’s post! I had SO much fun reading the funny and sweet engagement stories you all posted, so much so that I had a REALLY hard time picking a winner. I wanted to pick all of you! Unfortunately, I can’t do that but know that I wanted to. The winner for yesterday’s $20 Amazon gift card was Stephanie Jessee! Her post about how her husband paid for her ring made me laugh out loud…which is always a good thing. We will be in touch!

Keep checking back tomorrow for one more giveaway before the GIANT giveaway on Friday!

Happy Wednesday!

My cousin got married in August, and her something old and something new were combined. Our maternal grandmother died when our moms were in their 20s, so we sadly never met her. She had this beautiful, tiny watch that had diamonds around the watch face and on the band. Erin had earrings and a bracelet made with the old diamonds and new pearls. They were gorgeous!! Such a sentimental piece to have on her wedding day.

When I got married 39 years ago, my garter contained a blue satin ribbon my grandmother wrapped around her baby gift to me. We decided to use it for my ‘something blue’. Then I found out that when I was born, she had really wanted a boy.

My something old was the sleeve off of my mom’s wedding dress wrapped around my bouquet. It was beautiful. We put a little St.Christopher figurine in my bouquet that belonged to my nanny. She gave that figurine to my Uncle Jody when he was deployed during the Gulf War and he passed away in 1999. We put it on my bouquet because it was a reminder of my uncle and because I was traveling into this new chapter of my life. St. Christopher was the protector of traveling. My something blue was a little ribbon that was tied on the inside of my garter.

When I was young, my father passed away. Before that, he gave me a beautiful hair clip with a cubic zirconium sunburst on the end. To incorporate him as a part of my day, I use the pin as my “something old” as a place holder for my birdcage veil. Something borrowed was a ring from my mom with a gold pearl that she saved to share with me on my wedding day, as she had worn it on hers. My something new was my step-daughter, who also wore my “something blue” as a ribbon around her flower girl dress (which matched my flowers!). I also had her carry a sign down the aisle that said “Last chance to run, Daddy!” with the writing in blue. Everyone laughed, and it was a perfect reflection of my/my husband’s sense of humor!

Old – the veil my mom made & wore on her wedding day, New – dress, Borrowed – lace handkerchief from my grandmother, Blue – shoes!

My nana passed away when I was in 3rd grade. I wore her sapphire ring as something old and something blue.

I would use these things in my wedding:
Old – my grandmother has a gold coin from the treasure in a sunken ship that she wears that I would like to tie to the bouquet.
New – a new pair of pearl earrings
Borrowed – a tradition from another culture, such as the Indian tradition of exchanging floral garlands
Blue – notes from bridesmaids on the bottom of my shoes in blue

My favorite part of mine was borrowing my mom’s engagement ring. She also used blue thread to embroider our initials and date on my slip. My old was a lace hankercheif from my husband’s deceased grandmother and my new was my jewelry from my dad.

My something old is going to be a sentimental ring from my grandmother who may or may not be able to come to the wedding, my something new is my dress & my veil, my something blue is my garter, and my favorite thing– my something borrowed is my mom’s wedding shoes!! I was stressing about what shoes I wanted to wear for the big day, and my mom suddenly remembered she had her old ones! I tried them on and it was a perfect fit. I am so excited and think that it is super special 🙂

For my wedding in June, I incorporated my something blue into my wedding colors. My borrowed was a garter made from lace of my sweet mother-in-law’s wedding dress. My new was the whole wedding experience!! Loved it and glad it only happens once 🙂

I love these traditions! Here’s how I incorporated them into my wedding:

something old: I had an old photo of my grandmother (who passed away a few years ago and was so dear to me) around my bouquet. I also have 3 of the diamonds from her engagement ring incorporated into my engagement ring, which was designed by my husband.

something new: I wore a new bracelet and earrings during the ceremony.

something borrowed: My mother’s pearls were also wrapped around my bouquet, and the pearls held the photo of my grandmother.

something blue: I had my seamstress embroider my wedding date in blue thread under the first layer of my wedding dress…however, when I went to pick up the dress, she had embroidered the WRONG date! I was horrified, and so was she for a moment, but luckily she was able to take it out and redo it within the day!

My new, borrowed and old was pretty simple, but I want to share my friend’s idea she used in her wedding.
She had a bouquet made entirely of broaches and jewelry. She had one from her grandmother and something that represented everyone in her family. Her mom even placed a watch that had stopped at the time of her birth. It was so sentimental and sweet, but very heavy!
