Behind the Lens: My Retreat and the Place That I Love

It all started 8 years ago when my sister and I made the trek north to this place called Kanakuk Kamps, a Christian sports camp tucked away in the Ozark hills of Missouri. We were so nervous about arriving there and separating (we had intentionally decided to work at different kamps), not to mention being surrounded by a ton of people we had never met in a place we had never been. A dose of intimidation, anyone? Pep talks were given to each other before we got out of the car, each one of us hoping the other one actually believed what we were saying. Well, she must have given me a seriously good pep talk because eight years later, I’m still finding myself making that trek north.

Crazily, I found myself working there 3 summers in college, 3 post college, 1 year at their Kanakuk Institute, and now 2 summers as a kid sitter for one of the dearest families (I wrote this blog last year about how I feel about this place). As I drove in yesterday, I realized that it had been 8 years. As in 2 short of a decade! Say whaaaa?!?!?! Insane. Still to this day, when I drive in to those Ozark hills, my body relaxes and I feel like I’m home. Every time I come, I wrestle with what that means. After two years of being away, though, I’ve settled in to the fact that home doesn’t have to be where you live. It’s where your heart is.

I had a three-week break from my wedding schedule and so I decided to spend it here…in a place that brings me rest and restoration. I’ll still be working, blogging Mon. Tue. Fri., editing and keeping up with my wonderful clients but also enjoying the retreat that this beautiful place has to offer. Not to mention, I’ll be kid sitting two of my all time favorite kiddos. At the end of my time here, I’ll also be doing a SUPER fun project for Mary Fields Photography and I can’t wait to share more! Stay tuned for a mix of work and play!

Happy Monday!

I couldn’t have said it any better myself. I love how Kamp offers this to so many in different ways. K1 to you, K2 to me. But the same effect. So glad you get to go for 3 weeks, friend. Jealous part of one right here. 😉

I’m hijacking this. Amen and amen!!!…
