Behind the Lens | Make a List — You’ll Feel Better

I never used to be a list person. Not on paper anyway. I could keep a running list in my head and rarely ever miss anything. Then…I started a business. Yep, that was a point of re-evalutiaton. With way too many things for my brain to keep track of, I had to resort to making lists and now, well now I am a list fanatic. If I try and work through the day sans list, I become like a person stuck in a cave who is claustrophobic. Breathing gets short. Mind starts racing. Panic sets in. Hyperventilation is a real thing. It may sound extreme but I’m not really kidding. I feel incredibly overwhelmed and it can only be stopped by one thing. Well, maybe two. Prayer and making a list.

That’s how I felt this morning when I woke up and realized that I’m leaving for Florida in two days and have a LOT to do. My mind starts jumping like popcorn from one thing to the next of what MUST get accomplished before I can leave town and I begin to feel paralyzed. So I took a deep breath, made myself some coffee and got out my trusty ‘To Do’ list. What is it about a warm cup of coffee and writing things down on paper that make you feel like you just might be able to conquer the world? Forgetting of course that prior to those two ingredients, you thought you might keel over from anxiety. Funny how that works. Well, whether it makes sense or not, the phrase at the bottom of my ‘To Do’ list pad has a word of truth. ‘Make a list–You’ll feel better.’ And boy, do I.

It’s amazing how it’s not only freeing to put it all on paper and take the pressure off of remembering, but it is also so liberating to cross it off when it’s done. This ‘list girl’ is convinced of its power. So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed at the start of this week, grab a cup of coffee and a pad of paper…and make a list. You’ll feel better.

Happy Monday!

(Not gonna lie, sometimes I’ll add something to the list that I’ve already done just for the satisfaction of crossing it off. #signsofalistnerd)
