Behind the Lens | Friday Tips and Tricks | Attention to Detail

So…by no means do I consider myself an expert when it comes to photography but I have taken my fair share of pictures. More than I’d probably even like to admit because well…I suffer from a happy trigger finger! If you’re a past client, you know this first-hand! Along the way of my  photog journey, I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks. If you’re a photographer yourself, a wedding planner, designer or just an excited blog reader, I think this tip will apply to all of you!

When I first started, I was SO focused on what my camera was doing and how my clients were perceiving me, that I rarely took the time to actually do something very important. Pay attention to detail. When I was looking through my viewfinder, I was more conscientious of my light meter than I was of what was actually in the frame. If you were to come and sift through images I took in my first year, you would find all kinds of fun things like hairs sticking up, crooked ties, wrinkled dresses and my personal favorite…my camera bag. I swear, my camera bag was in 1/3 of my shots for the first year! I was so focused on other things I hardly noticed and when I did, I’d just say, ‘Oh, I’ll edit it out later.’ Well, ladies and gentleman, that was a definite rookie mistake! If there is one thing I have learned in the years I’ve been doing this, it is to force yourself to slow down enough to give attention to the details! It will make a HUGE difference in editing time and the overall impact of your final product. I have trained my eye to actually LOOK through my viewfinder and not just use the viewfinder. Not to mention, I have also learned to ask for others eyes around me, whether it is my assistant or family members so that we are all catching those little details that we would otherwise regret later.

This tip and trick I think applies to all things of life. Don’t go so fast that you miss the details. The little things. For it’s the little things that can make something great!

Happy Friday!
